You can teach someone to draw, too

I watched some kind of child genius program and they said peoples capacity to pick things up and retain information is genetic, so basically IQ is genetic, but it doesn't mean that you can't achieve high grades if you have a low IQ, you just have to work harder for it. Kinda explains why some kids have to revise 24/7 to get the same grades as the kid who revises the night before.

I think that it's extremely rude and pretentious of you to call your gf's talent as useless. There are hundreds of ways how a person can be considered "smart", how an artist mixes his colours to get one specific, how a writer expresses grief just by using some words, how a scientist uses his brain and observational skills to understand the universe. I don't think that these people were born geniuses, they've trained their minds to do just that, some people are just born with a healthier mind that is curious and learns faster than the others, but this is only good if it gets stimulated, if it doesn't then it's useless. Also you can teach someone to draw... and to the original point of your thread, I think being smart is a talent, which is needs stimulation and training, just like an athlete needs to stay in form.

in sociology we talked about this, if intelligence was genetic or taught.
we agreed on both but more towards intelligence can be taught.

I don't think you can necessarily "teach" someone to be smart, it's just something that you are born with the ability to have.
#88087 - anon (08/03/2013) [-]
Having a pretty good GPA and score on the ACT doesn't dictate your intelligence

It is possible for a person to get 'smarter'

Being 'smart' isn't a talent

I think you should be nice to your girlfriend and that drawing is considered a talent because "being smart" is pretty vague. If you were talented at something in particular it would be more comparable. Honestly I wish I could draw, everyone's smart nowadays, at least in high school, so it's not much of a special thing any more.

They used to think that you had to be smart to play chess. But then when Deep Blue beat Kasperov in chess did it show that the computer was smart or just had sheer computing strength?
#88084 - flylikefluttershy (08/03/2013) [-]
wouldn't the person/people who created Deep blue be considered smart for creating a computer that could beat Kasperov at chess? I dunno. being smart has a bit too large of a spectrum. :p

See, the inventors of Deep Blue are smart. Deep Blue was not. You can't train/teach something /someone to be smart. Ever try to make a dog be smart? You can't. You can teach it to not do things, or to obey commands, but a dog that is stupid will stay stupid while one that is smart will be smart.

You can't teach "smartness".

If they can teach a monkey sign language they can teach a child how to "be smart"
#88079 - flylikefluttershy (08/03/2013) [-]
well, it really depends what degree of 'smart' we're talking about, isn't it? I mean, if we were to liken teaching a monkey sign language to teaching a child to read, then yeah, anyone can be smart. if we liken it teaching a monkey sign language to teaching a child, say, Theoretical Astrophysics, the idea of smart drastically changes.
I really hope that makes sense.

I agree, but in this case and many cases I believe we use the wrong standards to evaluate intellect, a GPA and ACT scores mean nothing in the broad scheme of things; being able to score a high GPA is a talent because you taught yourself to attain a goal but it doesn't prove any level of true intellect.
#88081 - flylikefluttershy (08/03/2013) [-]
Technically, if you could teach yourself something, wouldn't that act alone be a sign of intellect? I figured intellect was the ability to learn and reason.
