Right, that's why I initially shook my head at the absurdity of this particular scene in the show when I first saw it, how can you freeze something when there's nothing there to be frozen? I believe that's where the substance they had to use to slow the photons down came into the picture, they had to bring it down to as low possible temperature as they could to make it as dense as possible while still allowing the photons to pass through it. I don't remember whether or not what kind of substance they used for that experiment, I'll have to see if I can find that too.

I believe I read that there was a particular group of scientist that found a way to slow light down to around 38mph, and then I thought I read later that they'd finally achieved stopping it completely. Then again I don't remember where I read it, so I could just be making it up. Maybe I only thought that they had because I read that in order to do so (stop light completely) a substance has to be cooled to absolute zero. It's been a while since I've read anything about it though, so I'd have to go back and look for any updated information on it.
