"Quite biased" is an understatement.
That because Trump was trying to claim credit for the drop in the national debt when it had literally nothing to do with him. There's no "misleading" rank on politifact though
It's not misleading. It's fact. The national debt went down 12 million in his first month. Whether or not it was due to Trump or other factors is irrelevant to that fact.
Right, they were "reading between the lines" to determine his meaning rather the statement's most literal meaning, word-for-word.
This is what he said. He obviously said this because he was trying to claim the media was ignoring his accomplishment. Wouldn't you agree?
Well then they should have taken a quote that says "The national debt went down by 12 billion because of my accomplishments" instead of "the national debt went down by 12 billion".
The fact is that Politifact chose that quote and still labeled it mostly false. It's a true statement. Their job isn't to report on implications or possible meanings. All this does is mislead people and continue to push their anti-Trump agenda.
There was no quote that explicitly said "because of my accomplishments", or "I lowered the debt". That part was implied, which is the issue here.
If they chose to focus on the literal meaning of the words rather on what was meant by them, that would also be misleading. Trump didn't tweet this simply because he wanted people to know a trivial fact.
Again, their job isn't to read into implications or make assumptions. The statement is "The national debt in my first month went down by 12 billion." This is true. The issue here is that they labeled it mostly false.
So people tweeting out facts are now mostly false if they benefit the person tweeting about it? That's completely silly. As for misleading, the national debt went down by 12 billion is as straightforward of a statement as you can make it. It's open to interpretation, but labeling it as "mostly false" because of that is an absolute lie. Also the national debt is not a trivial fact.
Their job is whatever they want it to be. It's their organization.
The fact is trivial because the national debt fluctuates by billions or tens of billions of dollars every day. The fact that it happened to be $12 billion lower on February 20 compared to January 20 is a coincidence, and doesn't mean the debt has actually been paid in any part.
If I were running a fact-checking site to keep politicians honest, I'd rate this Tweet "technically true but deliberately misleading". But that's not an option on Politifact's rating system.
Well then they shouldn't call themselves a fact checking website.
The fact is still truth, not mostly false.
As long as you don't rate it mostly false and acknowledge truth behind the statement in your interpretation, I'll trust you and your website more than Politifact.
Yeah after this one I can't trust politifact at all anymore. The numbers check out indeed.
Politifact has been doing this since the start. Here's one early into the elections.
