the gorilla is a herbivore and still got large sharp teeth
#357 - animedudej (02/06/2014) [-]
as far as i understand carnivores have sharper teeth to tear through flesh, sharper if it tends to have to tear into the tough hide of certain animals

and Herbivores have duller teeth to grind leafs etc with more powerfull jaws depending on it's habitat

Omnivores have a mix like us Humans have our Canines as well as blunt teeth
#353 - tacticalhog (02/06/2014) [-]
I think some prehistoric herbivores had sharper teeth, like the brontosaurus. Not sure why. Pictured is one such tooth.

I think you mean a carnivore that has blunt teeth... Hmmm the only carnivore I can think of without sharp teeth is a baleen whale.

Panda bears are herbivores with sharp teeth.

But both these animals have teeth that match up with their diet.

Eh... Hippos are pretty close. Still eat birds and each other.

#392 - felixjarl (02/06/2014) [-]
Hippos are actually known to not only scavenge bu also kill for the meat. even cannibalism.

#145 - superduperpuper (02/06/2014) [-]
Not only birds. Hippos are pretty fucking aggressive when it comes to territory. They might not eat them (I'm not sure thought) but hippos need the sharp teeth also to attack anything that comes in their territory. Be it birds, gazelles or even humans. If I remember right they even sometimes attack harder animals like lions, because hippos are more dangerous ones when they are in the water. So they are basically omnivores (both kinds of teeth, like you can see in the picture.), but they often just use the sharp teeth to kill/hurt other animals without eating them.

Looking at that picture, they have blunt-ish teeth in the back of their mouth for plants. Neato design.

Ah, thank you. Hippos were the fruit of a quick internet search.

some species fruit bat have extremely sharp teeth, presumably due to the type of fruit native to their habitat.

but Ham's argument doesn't work because while omnivores like bears and raccoon do have sharp teeth, they also have blunt back teeth made for mashing and grinding plants and such.
blunt teeth which lions lack. Nye would have explained that but they had moved on to another subject after this statement.

Do you mean herbivore that has sharp teeth? Because basically every herbivore has blunt teeth
#292 - anon (02/06/2014) [-]
Depending on what it eats, it's teeth may not be considered sharp but definitely not blunt (I'm thinking herbivorous dinosaurs) secondly not all their teeth are the same. It might mostly have blunt teeth but that doesn't mean it has sharper teeth for other utilities (besides eating meat) (also this is besides the point of the post just kind of a general idea a lot of you seem to have wrong it's not that black and white as sharp = carnivore and blunt= herbivore (although that's generally correct)

The example he used was bears and pandas, my thoughts as he was stating it though was that Panda need relatively sharp teeth in order to break through the bamboo they eat.
#152 - anon (02/06/2014) [-]
Bears are omnivorous though. Or did he mean strictly herbivore. Bear eat fish and some species eat insects.
#355 - hellsjester (02/06/2014) [-]
well pandas for the most part only eat plants. but on rare occasion they will eat steak. Cause even pandas hate vegans
#39 - felixjarl (02/05/2014) [-]
Yes exactly that. my appologies.
