Take the UV part with a grain of salt, you still want to pack the base page very tightly to get the most painting room, I just mean that seams are much easier to deal with ever since Z-Brush's polypaint function and programs like Substance Painter. If you haven't already, I would highly recommend checking out Substance Painter. I started in the school's game art program (left it because at the time its chair was an utter and complete asshole, who didn't kno how to teach) and for whatever reason was required to have a MacBook pro.
