Length of ladders for scaling walls, shit like that. Practical problems.
Same goes for trigonometry, lots of applications in mechanics that can actually help in real life situations. You'd be surprised at how many triangles can be found in real life.
You shouldn't just rule out uses of mathematics because you can't see a use for it on the surface of things. Many problems can be simplified and solved by use of mathematics.

id say getting the exact measurements on a triangle is a lot harder than just measuring the distance that youre trying to find with the theorem
rather than measuring a and b and squaring them to find the c, you could just measure the c or get a rough approximation with eye measuring
#89 - dontread (05/01/2015) [-]
those are all horrible ideas when measuring things that merit precise measuring.
You can't always JUST measure what c is. That's why you're using the theorem in the first place.
I know the buildings 30 feet high and Im gonna set up 5 feet away from it.
Boom sqrt (900 + 25) is my answer. I can do that in my phone instead of getting in all these awkward positions to try and measure what C is (probably inaccurately too)

at what point is something not specialized for you?
I've never called a Plank Man to do that stuff for me lol.
I'm talking about something the everyday man might encounter, like a camper.
Hell you could use it to plan trips. What's the shortest path possible for my destination?
Boom! P.Theoreom. You could do that easily in your head in like a second.
You could use it if you're a painter. It's well known that math was used in architecture and art back even in the days of Ancient Greece. P.Thereom especially.
Find what size monitors and TV's you're buying (diagonal)
I use P.Thereom all the time when dealing with Physics. It's used a lot in construction jobs too (for all kinds of purposes)

can say this, have never ever had to fix a gap in the road, nor do i know someone who has had to outside of work
trips are about the journey and calculating that shit with a theorem is another thing ive never heard or seen anyone do before
i dont really see how using it would help in art at all
and usually when one is buying a tv/monitor theyre actually already measured in that way
not trying to be an asshole and shoot your stuff down just because, i just never ever heard of anyone doing any of those things before except for in proffessions that deal with it
#88 - dontread (05/01/2015) [-]
You're not a camper are you?
I stated that example for a typical camper or traveler. The P.Thereom is a tool; Nothing else. You can choose to use it or not. Lots of places have fire extinguishers, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna be used every 6 month or so.
The option is there for them if they ever need it.
Exactly, SOMEBODY had to measure it didn't they? And some Tv's aren't measured that way or at least aren't advertised that way. In that case you'll be able to make the measurement right away if you ever need it.
What if you want a custom TV? You're gonna have to know how wide and high it needs to go. When you order/ask for it you'll need to be able to report the diagonal width of the monitor.
Well thats fine if you don't see how it helps out in art. Although, you cannot deny that math has been integral to art for centuries. That's not an opinion, that's something historians teach people all the time when talking about past civilizations.

i didnt say math wasnt useful in art, i said i dont see how pythagoras theorem can be of use in it
and honestly with the tvs, if im gonna measure at all the chance is bigger i just go for the inch angle with a ruler or one of those extendable ones instead of breaking out the math after having had to measure two sides instead of just one

I dunno man. Carpenters, Electricians, really anyone that wants to find a distance using triangulation. Square roots may not be super common, but using them to find a length of something you don't immediately know can be nice.
Sure, you could just get some measuring tape, but its more about the principle than anything. If you don't know what a square root is, you are likely in 7th grade. Kids in 7th grade don't always know what they want to do for a living. I didnt decide to do programming for a career until like 2 years ago and Im 22. Learning basic math sets you up to learn high level stuff if you decide its what you want to dabble in.
So yeah. The average soccer mom isn't going to use square roots to find the distance from her car to the supermarket, but that doesnt make it trvial. Its part of learning a bigger picture. Singling it out for its own usefulness isnt a fair argument~

This was about her not being able to articulate her point. She's still incredibly stupid even if her opinion isn't as shitty as you'd expect of tumblr.
