Circumcision is actually in the majority in North America, I would agree that most don't know the difference when they are older, especially because most will only ever see cut penises. The problem is that the procedure does carry risk of severe scaring and damage to a very sensitive (and I think most men would agree, vital) organ. There can be health and emotional risks, the court felt that the child had the right to decide what happens to their own body. No person should be allowed to dictate what happens to the body of another. One could make the example of a parent tattooing their child, the child might not want the tattoo when their older or not agree with the message the tattoo represents, removal of such a tattoo would be very painful and unpleasant. One must ask why it should be considered within the right of a parent to decide to perform an unnecessary and potential dangerous procedure on their child. It would be different if it would save the child's life but this does not. I am also circumcised and not terribly bothered by the fact, I've had a boyfriend who was uncut and it was different but not much, though he really needed to wash. Honestly it comes down to personal taste, but it should be a right available to any male to decide if they want it done or not.

The reason the court did this is because it is potentially dangerous to the child if there is an error. Also, there is no medical reason for the procedure, cleaning is very easy (although my ex wasn't very good at it). The court declared that the right of the child to remain whole until such a time as they can make the decision themselves outweighs the rights of the parents to force their beliefs on their children. The point was also raised of not doing it so that the child does not feel they have been inducted into whichever religion and can freely choose their own at a later age.

I get that. But people act like circumcised kids are some oppressed minority, when in reality, they hardly notice that they've been circumcised. It's not this life changing event that needs input from gov't, parents, churches, etc. It's a small ritual that's been observed for literally millennia, with no adverse health/emotional effects. And as a side note, I like my penis circumcised, and I'm happy my parents had it done then so I don't have to deal with it now.

Coming from a man, which is a point of view you will never have, I'm telling you that your son will probably not care. It's more socially accepted to see a circumcised penis, so you saved your son some embarrassment later, no more, no less. Why do people act like circumcision is like replacing the penis with some replacement cyborg penis or something? It removes a piece of skin the serves no purpose. It's not an issue.

Yes, let them just chop off the dick altogether. None of your business what people do with their children! After all, it's not emotionally scarring.
User avatar #655 - fatamerican (06/29/2012) [-]
They're not chopping off the whole dick anyway. They're removing a flap of skin, with little to no penalty for doing this later in life. It truly isn't any sort of government's business what parents do in this sense, especially on religious grounds. I reiterate that it is not emotionally scarring, seeing as I'm circumcised and have zero recollection of the event.
