There are lots of tips actually. I suggest making shadows and lights on a different layer (overlay with black and white strokes). When you are done shading, you could make ambient light on another layer, which will be colored vibrant strokes with low opacity (5%-15%). Paint with those only in dark areas. It should brighten shadows and give your object more volume. This works well when your shadows are agressive. Black color for shadows is not the best sometimes. You could make a gradient map to apply color to dark areas. Smoothen your strokes with smudge tool (0 hardness). You should be checking for values by turning image to greyscale. If something blends or doesnt stand out enough, make it stand out. I may have few more, but cant think of any.
