I've been reading up on it since I wrote that comment... and I get where you're going at, I see the proof... But I still think it's fucking stupid to be honest, I get that the 9's go on infinitely, but the second you need to apply it to a practical situation you will need it to stop at a point, and when that happens it is no longer equal to one, or am I wrong there?
It's all based on the idea of infinity... but then we get into the philosophical aspects of maths, "how does infinity exist/work" etc...

If you stop it at a point then you arent dealing with 0.999.... at all. Practical situations like every day maths have no use for it, counting change or to check the time.

But some rudimentary proofs do rely on it to a very small degree, so it does have some applications.

the concepts of infinity are very well fleshed out in hilberts paradox. But zero and infinity are both very strange numbers to work with, they really do fuck with the natural order but they are how maths works, if they didnt work like that, then maths itself would have a hard time being consistent where it mattered.

And there are a few different kinds of infinity. Countable and uncountable infinites are the most common, representing the first and second order of infinites respectively. but there are more..... infinitely more if you truly want to get into semantics.

I am a maths lover, numbers and shit man, i love it.

We can do a mythexplain if someone offers to do it. If not, then this site will go without. I know I can't do it and we don't just make the accounts, people make it and inform us that they are a new 'explain'.
