Any time. I find chickens are quite joyous and very calming to watch. And as long as you handle them a lot as babies (Or keep them mostly separate the first few days and only work with them one on one) they'll imprint onto you and you'll be mommy.

Doesn't always work, but if you buy them from a hatchery like my pet chicken you've got a better shot at it.

Mine aren't really loud, though the egg song (Bawk bawk bawk BAWK!) can be sort've loud. Mine mostly growl and brrrr at me. They are a lot quieter than a rooster. They are really quiet when they are alone. In groups they can be noisey.

Mostly chickens walk around and peck at things. In groups they'll chase each other around and play. They'll come running for any treats and it's really fun to watch them. If you scatter their food they'll spend most the day scratching at the ground and eating, otherwise they just kinda chill. Sometimes they flop on their side and sunbath and it's the cutest thing ever. They like dust baths, too. So having a small dish of sand or something would be good. They like roosting at night, basically perching on something. To feed it just get a bag of chicken food at TSC or a feed store, and if you wanna feed it table scraps/grass get a bag of appropriate for it's size.

And temperament depends on breed/raising. One of my hens runs right up to me and LOVES getting pet and fussed over, the other just kinda hangs around like a cat, and some are spooky. Most places have a minimum order, Mypetchicken offers a minimum order of 3, which is a very good number to start with. Even if you only keep one or two and give away the rest. It'll let you find the right personality that you adore. For an apartment I would recommend a bantam (mini) breed. They are easier to keep and cheaper to feed.

www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/product-search.aspx?catID=0&Strname=bantam&CatName=

This is a full list of the mini breeds. You can get surprise chicks from an assortment and see what they grow into or order the sorted chicks. Chickens, specially minis, are cheap to feed. A large bag of feed (50 pounds) is only 12$ and would probably feed them several months. And if you only feed them the bagged food you wont need grit. Mypetchicken also sells diapers and saddles for them.

Yeah, people in Japan have small bantam chickens as pets all the time. Sometimes even roosters.

You'd have to check your apartments rules but chances are sneaking in a chicken would be easier than a duck. Specially a small one.

Ducks and dogs can get along. I have three dogs who just LOVE snuggling with the chickens and ducks. It's just introducing them and getting a breed with a low prey drive.

If she's seriously intent on a bird consider a chicken. There are lots of gorgeous breeds like the Silkies, and there are Bantams (which is a general term for mini chicken breeds), and LOTS of chickens with absolutely stunning feathers.

Potty training them is as simple as getting a clicker and clicking it every time they poop. Then giving them a treat. Eventually they'll poop on command.. Then take them to the little box and start clicking and treating them for pooping there. Eventually it becomes a habit.

I've also had ducks myself, including Pekins. They were actually very friendly and quiet for me, so it must just be how you raise them. However, he was not kidding when he said they shit A LOT. They can be very fun to have, but very messy.
User avatar #111 - Icedangel (04/12/2014) [-]
yeah.. I made the mistake of getting mine at 1 day and then letting him stay with the chickens. He imprinted on them instead of me. Now the chickens are going through that weird 'teenage' phase where they just don't want to be touched and the duck thinks he has to, too. Plus if you DARE take him away from his chickens he throws a crying fit.

User avatar #55 - Icedangel (04/12/2014) [-]
If you want a quiet duck go for a male. In every breed the males rarely quack. In the Cayuga breed they are nearly mute. I don't have any myself, but I've been told they are more like cats than dogs. And because they are smaller they can probably fly more.

In most parts of the US a ducks must have their back toe cut off and they must be banded (put a metal band around their leg)

Just be warned when I say ducks shit a LOT. Mine goes shit two or three times every ten minutes. Also if you get a drake from a young age there is a chance he will try to.. uhm. Mate. With you. Both sexes are quite, so you might be better off with a hen. But I'm not 100% on that. I'd research duck care extensively.
User avatar #89 - fadetometallica (04/12/2014) [-]
Yeah it almost seems like it'd be more pain than it's worth. Plus I want a dog, and that's just a recipe for disaster. So maybe we just won't get the duck. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.
