"A position which you could not fill without?....you guessed it, school. "
Only because it was arbitrarily decided so. School is just about getting a piece of paper, it gives you nothing and it's not something enjoyable nor good for your spirit. It's like a mandatory prison sentence for no crime other than being born.
I'd actually rather work as a janitor or garbage man that spend another day in school. I left many years ago and I'd kill myself before going back. Fuck "filling a place in society", the soul crushing tediousness isn't worth it.

I agree that you can live a happy life without school; It is tedious at times. I guess society needs the garbage-men, and the janitors, so abandoning education still allows service to be done in society.
I also agree that not all things taught in school are of much use (when will I ever have to calculate the gravitational force applied on the earth by the moon?). That being said, school is thought to be designed to cater to everyone. So while the future physicists may find the ability to calculate gravitational force useful, a future business owner may not.
All I'm saying is, whilst we do need the Janitors, garbage-men, and entrepreneurs, we also need people with certain skills which only formal education may provide; nurses, doctors, engineers...etc. These people can not rise to such professions without the basics which are taught in school.
I for one am starting at a pharmacy school next month, and I know for a fact that I have not used any of the calculus that I learned in high school, during post secondary. However, the biology, chemistry, and even the more simple mathematics that I was taught in high school have been of so much use.
