Yeah, it's not only the owls I never even leave my pomeranian outside alone, lol - luckily I don't think an owl would try anything with big predators like my huskies and wolfdogs all gathered around her though but there are literally dozens of stray and feral cats because we live on the outskirts of a very, very small town which is mostly surrounded by big fields full of cattle and wheat and such - so it draws a lot of mice, and that means owls and cat populations.

Not to mention everyone and their brother seems to feel that allowing their dogs to roam free is just the thing to do, and of course cruel people who would gladly steal a cat, or nab it for a bait animal in dog fighting or use it as target practice... nah, I don't regret keeping mine indoors-only - if it was the option between that or letting them go outside, I'd choose indoors every time.

I already provide them with as much enrichment as I can - my home is overflowing with a good half a dozen cat trees, even more scratching posts and various kitty toys... I'm looking to install a catwalk type system too, at least in my bedroom if not in the rest of the house too lol.

But I think especially with so many living in the household, they would really love their own catio. They deserve one!

That sucks man. I'd be pretty depressed.

At least he went out honorably and gloriously. I doubt many cats will get a better death than that.

How old was he/she? If they were within a year or two of probable death anyway I'd be happy they could find a glorious death like that rather than sickness and needing to be put down.

I thought cats could survive their terminal velocity. Was it overweight or a big breed?
#177 - exarzero (04/13/2015) [-]
Actually he was pretty well fit.
He may have be hurt on the way up.
His fall was very long, and I am unsure of what happened.
He survived the epic fall, and I had to put him down after 10 hours of treatment.
#156 - Ken M (04/13/2015) [-]
Cats survive falls due to how they fall. They right themselves and then flatten their body to lower their velocity, and land a particular way. Most likely the cat was already injured before an uncontrolled landing causing internal injuries and broken bones.
#135 - Dember (04/13/2015) [-]
Our neighborhood has a ton of owls - I see them at least once or twice a month, and hear them hooting and screeching when I sit outside with my dogs as they play before bed.

That reason among many others is why I keep my cats strictly indoors only. We have a decent sized home but I still feel a little disappointed that they can't explore the neighborhood and be safe at the same time.

That's why I've decided that my next $2,000 is going to building a large outdoor "Catio" to connect to one of my windows - so they can at least go outside in the yard like the dogs always do, but it'll be enclosed with sturdy mesh wire to keep them in and anything harmful out.

Going to be big, too - the space I've cleared for it is about 25 - 30 feet or so, depending on how far out we take it.
Plus it'll have lots of shelves and cat tree structures to make use of vertical space for climbing, perching, observing wildlife (gonna add some bird feeders right outside, like cat TV) and of course spots for sun bathing.

We have ten cats, mostly rescues but also a couple rare Savannahs as well. It seems like a worthy investment to me. = )
User avatar #178 - exarzero (04/13/2015) [-]
Sounds like a good plan. Owls are a rare thing here, but we did something like that.

Also, I do the same here with ferals too. Keep it up.

Shit like this makes me glad my cat is an inside cat. We've never stopped him from going outside, but he just doesn't like it very much out there. He's basically as much of a neet as I am.

Kate and leopold, and Hitch.

Use the good parts from that, and the former movie is better.
