actually right now for any one who serves alcohol minimum wagge is only $9.55. This is why tipping exists. Minimum wage for everyone else is currently $11 but servers who serve alcohol make less than minimum wage.

I live in a tourist town and this causes one of the biggest problems for our servers because people from other countries are not accustomed to tipping because their servers make proper wages.

Plenty of places also have a tip out policy to ensure cooks and hosts get tips as well. Usually servers are required to tip out a percent of total sales (not total tips).

The one thing that has always baffled me when it comes to serving is the float. I understand the need to start your shift with change for customers but if your supposed to have a float of $40 and your required to provide it then you are always $40 short of your own money because you always need to have it so you can work. It baffles me.

you minimum wage is less then the UK minimum wage which is £6.50($12.24 Canadian) (I am actually a bit shocked) and we are due it going up thanks to the new gov but we have an Apprentice minimum wage of £2.73($5.14 Canadian) which you are a trainee basically its designed for young people living with parents . Which is what I get plus bonus (normally an extra £10 a week) but your guaranteed a good job in the end if you do good as in at my placement If I pass at the end of the year I start getting around £9($16.95 Canadian) an hour.

I don't know if you checked my link but it shows that the wage will increase again this year. We are set to have a steady increase over the next few years.

I always hear the debate over how raising minimum wage will force small businesses to close but I remember reading an article about some where in the U.S that raised the minimum and the effect has been completely positive. The result of increased wages means more people have money to spend and in turn these small businesses bring in more money which keeps them open.

My standard is $12 an hour to start. I don't take a job below that because I have enough experience that anything less than that is an insult. Even $12 is pushing the limits with my experience ( I'm a cook) however, I trade off because I have been able to find myself jobs that are day time jobs. I currently work a Monday - Friday no holidays job from 9 am until around 3 pm. It allows me to be home with my wife and daughter at night and it is worth the trade off from a little extra cash with shitty night work.

The Minimum wage increase bring more money to businesses has been pretty much proven in the UK hence why the pay goes up every year in the uk however thanks to that retailers and wholesalers increase the prices of there products to match the increase which they shouldn't do because that creates inflation. The new UK government might be freezing tax and national insurance to tackle that problem but you know what business are like "people have more money..lets rise our prices then". so your country might be the same when your minimum wage increases
#96 - swiftshadow (05/14/2015) [-]
Some places in Canada might, however I do not believe the area I live in will. I am in a tourist town ( Niagara Falls) and prices are already inflated as it is. If the entire world economy improved I could see prices going up here but locals already pay an inflated prices just for living here. Businesses know that and they put out promotions to bring in local crowds where they get discounts.

Examples of these are sleep cheap: one weekend a year that hotels give locals rooms for extremely cheap to allow them to enjoy the luxury of these places without the price. The local Dairy Queen puts out a 2 for one coupon on everything in store as well. I don't think most businesses would inflate prices based on locals making more money. Especially in the off season when they count on local business to stay open.
User avatar #74 - exarzero (05/13/2015) [-]
Ahh, indeed. It comes down to perspective then.

Though I do have to say, anytime the Min-wage goes up here... prices skyrocket. It tends to backfire. And companies can do as they please. It creates inflation. Luckily we are coming out of a low point in the economy. (I hope it sticks)

I know I sound ignorant but hear me out. I'm not saying the waiter job is not hard, I'm saying that if we tip the waiter, why do we not tip every single person in the kitchen or no tip at all? I was a waiter for 3 years and although I loved the tips, I never understood them. That's their job to wait wade? idk the past tense us, they are getting paid to do so so why are we giving them extra money? And if it is to show appreciation to their good job, then why don't we tip cashiers, cooks, store clerks, salesmen?
User avatar #71 - exarzero (05/13/2015) [-]
While I semi agree at certain points, and did this job myself along with taking Pizza orders, this link covers it more than I can. Also, from what I know tips are split at some places like that.

Kate and leopold, and Hitch.

I learned to force myself to deal with people I used to judge. Over time it got easier to to deal with. My problem was judging others. I am better after a few lessons in life...

I am going to get some rest now, but look forward to continue this again.

I went away for college, but have a few I am going to make. Things got a little rough for a while, but I promise some OC soon. :)
