Either your memory of what your granny told is you not accurate, or your granny flat out lied to you. Everything you just said is completely full of shit. There is absolutely no conceivable way they could have predicted that you would or would not have fared any better had you been born male over female. Your story is complete bollocks.
User avatar #19 - ewqua (04/27/2013) [-]
Well in theory it could be discovered by looking at the list of children dying after birth/being stillborn and the percent of boys/girls and so discovering which gender could have a better self preservation instinct. But let's drop this, practical use is better than theories. And practical use is that children are born all around the world, both boys and girls, and most of them live. Also I think you'll understand that I believe my family rather than a FJ user who didn't dare show his username. What is important is that the girl in the content is a bitch and that should be the topic of these conversations :)
User avatar #42 - blargchikahonkhonk (04/28/2013) [-]
1. the self preservation instinct is virtually the same with any persons (disqualifying those with defects in that area) and will always operate to its fullest unless it is manually suppressed

2. a baby is acting on instinct alone and is the equivalent of a non self aware animal when it is first born. this means that they do not have a weaker or stronger 'instinct of self-preservation' as u call it as there instincts are working to there full. a adults instincts are often suppressed but this is not the case for a baby

3. the previous 2 points are null anyway having an instinct to survive will not increase the chance of survival. the only thing that may have happen is adrenalin being released to increase heart rate among other things and a person can quite easily be injected with adrenalin with an almost instant effect. (do not confuse this with the "will to live" as there have been cases of people fighting disease who have lost their "will to live" to have immune system failures for no apparent reason which may be put down to them loosing their will to live but this is not applicable in the case of new born as they as previously stated are acting on instinct more like an non sentient animal)

4. the difference between the genders around birth is very small and they are not all to different. there are almost certainly no differences big enough to deiced survival. your story says that you survived with no problems in a case where a boy would have straight out died. that would suggest an incredible difference of survivibility between the genders. In truth the major difference between genders are not really apparent until puberty when secondary sexual characteristics appear.

5. also there is no way of predicting what would have happened if you where born male except for the high probability of it being near exactly the same as what happened to you irl.

TL;DR nice story to tell a grand daughter but with no actual fact and a bigger chance of being false than true

Thanks for explaining this :) this conversation started to be confusing, so I'm glad you explained this to all of us, especially to such a silly like me :D I hope I don't look as stupid as the fb girl up there, that'd be embarrassing XD thank you again
User avatar #53 - blargchikahonkhonk (04/28/2013) [-]
im not trying to get at you by the way there are sometimes special cases that may be different but its just the overall majority it like what i previously said
User avatar #15 - charpentier (04/27/2013) [-]
I'm sorry, I don't mean to insult your family but this sounds so wrong. Has there ever been scientific studies done that support your claims? How those gender affect the survival rate of a new born? How do you measure the ''strength'' of a baby? Cause I'm pretty sure muscle strength of a new born is basically equal in both gender.
User avatar #16 - ewqua (04/27/2013) [-]
I don't think she meant muscle strenght. She could be wrong for all I know, because we're all just human and humans are wrong, but if I got her thought correctly, it was about the inner 'instinct of self-preservation' rather than muscle strenght. As I said, we're all just human beings, so there's no doubt any of us could be wrong at any time :)
User avatar #10 - numbersixtyseven (04/27/2013) [-]
Well, now I at least now where you're coming from.

I have no clue if your grandmother is right, since I still don't see the difference between a boy and a girl in this instance. Just your gran saying so.

I might read up on this... She was either mistaken, or some of my biology lessons didn't sink in well enough.

I'm torn between agreeing with you and shoving you in the same group as the facebook-woman in the content.

On one end, we agree that she's a stupid cunt.

But on the other hand...How does a baby girl fight harder for her life than a baby boy? If you just take care of your kids, neither of them will have to 'fight'.
User avatar #21 - aahrg (04/28/2013) [-]
breast milk has certain hormones in it that female babies have more of. A male baby who is not breastfed will have more trouble than a female baby who is not breastfed.
User avatar #22 - numbersixtyseven (04/28/2013) [-]
Hmm. Interesting. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. This I have to read up on.
User avatar #9 - ewqua (04/27/2013) [-]
It's the genetics. I don't quite understand that, but luckily, I have an example: my grandmother was a geneticist in a hospital and examined my mother's amniotic fluid. She knew I'll be a girl and I'll be okay, but my mother didn't eat much while she was pregnant, so when I was born I weighed about 1.60 kg and my body wasn't fully developed. If I had been a boy, I wouldn't have survived it. But, because I'm a girl, I've survived without problems. (At least that's what granny told me...sorry if you find this weird, but I believe my family.) I guess it's okay not to believe that girls "fight" for their lives more, since men are physically stronger, but that's it. I hope this explanation will give you the answer and sorry it was such a long story :)
#17 - anonymous (04/27/2013) [-]

Actually, that particular pool is cleaned with ozone, meaning it's about as harsh as the water you drink, and the chemicals in the pool will break down the chemicals in your urine to form more of the chemicals that keep the pool clean. There are drainage and overflow pipes that constantly circulate the water, but the currents aren't strong enough to drag you out 200 yards and drown you.

Oh. Ok then...I just have very bad experience with the pools (3 ear infections, which hurt as hell, all caused by the pool water), so I rather pick the sea :)
