yea I agree, the pc shooters from 97-99 were and still are the biggest of all time and goldeneye cant quite compare, but since few good console shooters were made back then it had a definite influence i think on the industry.

But it's hard to compare anything made today from whatever came out during that period. We got system shock 2, HL, quake 2 and 3, starcraft, MGS, OoT, CS, Banjo Kazooie, among dozens of games across the platforms that constantly make up the top 20 of all time. The only years that we've even come close to that again were 03-04 and 07-08. After that its only been sequels to the IPs from these later years.

Yea I agree some games age better than others, but i was mostly going by impact on industry as well as quality. Compared to newer console shooters it doesn't play very well, but considering the limitations at the time, that's hardly surprising. N64 controller not the best pad for FPS.

When playing older games I try to not judge them by today's standards too much, especially given the hardware they had to work with back then. Still, I find games back then had a real soul and charm that you just don't see nowadays. Like, when I played the MGS games for the first time on the Collection, best games I have ever played in my life, and they looked beautiful in their own way, despite being 10+ years old and playing like ass for the first few hours.

Now it's just hype and marketing machines that force you to pick a side and preorder from the place that's gonna give you an extra cool item or something, as if your enjoyment of the game depended on it. And it sucks cuz you know youre missing out on some gear from some other place just because you didn't buy it from them. And then you get the game and it turns out to be a piece of shit compared to what they sold you (case in point, Watch Dogs, and half the other AAA games that came out this year so far).

Sorry for the rant, I got carried away...

Although in an unrelated note, while we're discussing games they don't make like they used to, I sure as hell miss arena shooters. I got high hopes for the new Unreal.

Speaking of old shooters, I think Quake 2 was a much larger influence on the evolution of the FPS, sure fewer kids probably played it, since it was on mid-life PC's, but the dark environments, the general control scheme, and the fact that it came out in the same year as Goldeneye really makes it sound like the real grand-daddy to games like Gears of War. This with the help of Half-Life the following year, it seemed like FPS's were moving on without 007, for better and for worse.

Though only Half-Life was on a console (PS2) I can see how Goldeneye might have affected console shooters, but anyone could look at the PC ones and translate analog sticks to mouse movement. I think the N64 controller was very well designed for the time with all it's nifty new features, it's just no one seemed to know if they were supposed to use the all the buttons or not.

everyone who made Rare special like the Stamper Brothers have long since left, Rare hasn't been rare for a long time

Goldeneye was easily their best and most important game because it set the groundwork for the next 20 years of console FPS and was a major killer app.
User avatar #195 - evilwheatleycore (09/16/2014) [-]
Why does everyone think that only the original team is worth anything?

Yes, I can understand that the Rare celebrities have gone, but that just leaves room for bright-eyes new kids to fill the space with new ideas. We just have to wait for the right combination, and under Microsoft, I don't see the guys behind Kinect Sports being allowed to make "Interstellar Bum Pirates" when they can make Cheetos Racer 6: Up the Mountain of Dew.
#196 - deckbox (09/16/2014) [-]
well the Stampers are synonymous with all the greatest Rare games , it would be like Breaking Bad without Vince Gilligan writing it.
User avatar #198 - evilwheatleycore (09/16/2014) [-]
I'm just making the point that new Stampers can be born. Not to say it can't get worse, but from some of what I've seen, we can at least wait to see what proper games come out soon

You don't just magically get people to make good games forever. They had vision and enthusiams, but everything falls apart over time. Especially teams compiled of people who come and go. One gets fired, one gets exchanged/promoted to another job, the studio changes the ideas change, everything is in motion. You don't just get one brand to make good things forever, it fades down to unoriginal and then to crap. (ex: iPhone -> iPhone 4 -> iPhone 6/6+; Apple made a revolution, but after some people going away [you know] it changed. New people came in with different ideas than the original teams had)

It's quite simple when you actually think about if for a minute and just stop being a hopeless fanboy. "OH THAT EVIL MICROSOFT COMPANY OF SATAN JUST STOLE MY FRANCHISE THAT PROBABLY HAD NO FUTURE!!!! IT'S ALL THEIR FAULT NOW, I'LL JUST PRETEND THAT IT WAS GOOD AT SOME POINT IN HISTORY"
User avatar #194 - evilwheatleycore (09/16/2014) [-]
Let's call it bad timing on Microsoft's part, though I hardly believe that just because faces change in a company they can't still do great things, just in a different way. Hell, thinking a company will only ever be run by chimps is a far worse idea than the controlling entity is a bit of an asshole. Rare got lucky to be honest, I've seen IP's and companies get swallowed up never to be seen again. At least Rare is allowed to make games.

User avatar #147 - jordanish (09/16/2014) [-]
Rare admitted the biggest problem they had with Microsoft was the way they micromanaged everything where as Nintendo just said "Here's a budget, play around a bit but make sure we have something worthwhile at the end of the day" allowing them to make good games for Nintendo consistently by using nintendo games as a template (Mario 64 for Donkey Kong 64, Mario Kart for Diddy Kong Racing etc) Starfox Adventures was shit though
User avatar #188 - evilwheatleycore (09/16/2014) [-]
Star Fox adventures was going to be an original IP until someone in Nintendo was all, "So your character is a fox right, we got a fox too. Interested, of course not but here is a bucket of money, now do it."
User avatar #135 - niggymon (09/16/2014) [-]
Ok ok .. so let me get this straight, after making a bunch of prestigious games , Nin tendo decides to sell them?
"fast forward into the future" lol I like how you just skipped the part where rare turned to shit contributing to Nintendo ultimately selling them.

#129 - itsasecrettoyou (09/16/2014) [-]
An excellent summary, I thank you for taking the time to articulate Rare's long and storied history.

Except in that time period Rare was also allowed to develop 2 games for the xbox console to attract old fans. Rare failed to do so and fucked themselves in the process. In 2003 they dropped 2 projects because of their incompetency. Microsoft actually had little to with Nuts & Bolts and the Kinect titles were given to keep Rare from falling under. You failed to mention that Rare basically doomed themselves because they couldn't get a project off the ground without scraping it.

Goldeneye not the crowning jewel of the company?
User avatar #99 - evilwheatleycore (09/16/2014) [-]
Something that's still good without nostalgia goggles on, I never played anything but Kirby 64, so when I got my hands on some Rare titles a few months ago in a package deal, I played and beat OoT and found out why they don't make them like they used to in relation to Goldeneye. Banjo-Kazooi however was great, not my type of game particularly but I can see the appeal from a mile away, while Conker is presumably the same game with a juvenile sense of humor that I can get behind, at times anyway.

Edit: Sorry for the long time, I was dicking with Anarchy Arcade for the first time

From what I remember in my early childhood, is a series of jumpscares and something impossible (at that age) and honestly, when my library also had Munch's Oddesy Voodoo Vince, Blinx the Timesweeper, and Armed and Dangerous among other things, I did not need Grabbed by the Ghoulies (love the title though)

Banjo Kazooie was and still is my favorite game. My mother beat that game before anyone else in my house did, and she hasn't played many games in here lifetime. Rare was pure gold, they even said a couple months ago they got back together and drew up a new character for banjo kazooie, and wrote out some story ideas in a coffee shop, but no one really had the time so nothing went through. They're still out there, and maybe. Just maybe. They will return in a blaze of glory.

Hey man, I'm trying to make the whole smoke thing work in Blender so it looks right and the character still have legs and I just can't get it to work how I want it to. I don't think it looks good enough to even bother putting up a picture of its present state.

I've learned a lot about fluids and smoke though as an added benefit. It's just soaking up hours and hours of my time.

I'll mess around with it here and there when I learn more, but I just can't find a way to make it look awesome. :/
