Well, yes, on the individual level one just wants to be big and memorable. But humanity as a whole wants, and needs to survive. And it can't happen with greed with the main drive.

We'll hammer out a workable habitat out of whatever comes of this planet thanks to us
thats how we 'll get to the stage of being able to explore space and colonize alien worlds, if we can destroy ours and re-colonize it
