The media in the US has deemed the term "assault weapon/rifle" as a bad term. "Assault" has a negative context to it. Select fire, as I understand it, means you can choose between firing modes. Single, burst, or full.

>Ammunition is ammunition. Just like Moose and Moose.
>Clip is used to load ammunition into a magazine. The ammo is then removed from the magazine into the chamber and the bullet expelled upon firing. Super simplified.
>The civilian model of the M16/M4 is an AR-15. AR stands for ArmaLite who originally designed the rifle. An M16 is a select fire, single shot or 3-shot burst with a 20" barrel while an M4 is a single shot or fully automatic rifle with a 14.5" barrel. An AR-15 can only be single shot with a barrel length of no less than 16" but can have a barrel length in upwards of 20".

Hope this helps!

That was very helpful thank you, so I suppose the term would be 'select fire' rifle (rather then call it an assault rifle) I had a friend who is into guns kind of growl at me when I called it an assault weapon....

My only problem with this post is that the M16 wasn't always single shot or 3 round burst, if I remember correctly. Weren't the ones we used in Vietnam, the M16 A1, I believe, fully auto?
User avatar #151 - kamikazikraut (06/13/2014) [-]
Good catch! Technically speaking we're on the M16A4. I just don't want to use too much information and confuse people. I'm trying to keep up with the comments.. But... Jesus fucking Christ...
User avatar #153 - jibblyjack (06/13/2014) [-]
I totally understand. I have seen a few that I wanted to reply to, but I am an amateur gun enthusiast, at best, and I do not want to flub up and misinform someone worse than they already are.
User avatar #156 - kamikazikraut (06/13/2014) [-]
Just ask. I did the Army bit for 4 years and worked behind a gun counter for 2. Whenever I come back in to look at the new goodies, I still get pulled aside by my old coworkers and asked questions.
User avatar #159 - jibblyjack (06/13/2014) [-]
I've been looking into getting my 4 years in, because I have a contracting job lined up if I do. This is getting off topic, sorry.

But, yeah, firearms are definitely a joy to handle and learn about. I just wish more people would willingly inform themselves. Those who don't do so are the reason people get hurt handling them.
User avatar #161 - kamikazikraut (06/13/2014) [-]
I would honestly not go in now. I'm still fighting with them. It seems like the military is taking a hatchet to downsize rather than a scalpel. If you do stick your neck out for any reason, right or wrong, it will get cut.

As for firearms, it's a great hobby. The mechanics in how each one works has always fascinated me. They may look similar, but each one is different. I would not suggest going in as a job until you're retired though. It's a great hobby, I just hopped behind a counter while on hold for another job. I spent way to much money working there. I have plenty of crazy stories though. Didn't know AK-47's were called "choppas" and had a lady ask me for a "bushwhacker, like the gun used to shoot those kids." I'd often get pulled aside because I would try to inform the customer I was working with as best as I could with what type of ammunition should be used for certain cenarios and how to provide proper maintenance of their firearms.
User avatar #173 - jibblyjack (06/13/2014) [-]
I always thought "choppa" was a term used for Uzis, but I'm not the most urban fella. In Arkansas, we have few hoods, and I don't live in them.

Well, when I was younger I began learning about guns while playing CoD with my friend and his dad, because his dad was a lifer and is now the owner of the contracting company I mentioned. The inner workings have always fascinated me, I love knowing how something works.

I'm a helicopter pilot so the first thing I thought was Arnold yelling... Then one of the guys came up behind me and whispered "He's looking for an AK-47"... Which to anyone else reading this... The civilian model of the AK-47 will vary depending on manufacture.. WASR-10 is the standard for the Century Arms Romanian imported ones....

I started out on MOH.. Moved to COD... Then ended up on BF.. BF was always my favorite. I occasionally still get on with my old Army buddies and we dominate.
User avatar #179 - jibblyjack (06/13/2014) [-]
Oh man, when my buddy, his brother, and his dad all would squad up on BF, it was like the sky opened up and fire was raining on people. Few men play BF games like someone who has been in active combat.

On a side note, if anyone is looking for a new toy, I highly suggest the AK. There are fairly cost effective, and they are fun as hell to fire.
User avatar #188 - kamikazikraut (06/13/2014) [-]
Or SKS. I have two and an AK style. SKS rifles are cheaper and have just as many mods as an AK style. shut up and buy both
User avatar #194 - jibblyjack (06/13/2014) [-]
The SKS is something I have never fired, but I would definitely like to. I have a buddy that has one, but him and I haven't been to the range together.
User avatar #200 - kamikazikraut (06/13/2014) [-]
Less recoil and longer range than an AK due to the length of the barrel. I read somewhere that the Chinese Army still uses the SKS rifle along side the AK because the stripper clips allow quicker reloading and for the accuracy of the rifle. AK is still a little more reliable and easier to take down.

Wait for the price to come down on an SKS though. A year and a half ago, anything over $300 was paying too much. Now they're up there past $400 for a shitty one. AK's, don't pay over $500 for something like a Romanian WASR-10
User avatar #487 - jibblyjack (06/13/2014) [-]
I'd never dream of paying $500 for an AK. I'm sure I could have my gunsmith buddy build one to the specs I want for that.

Catholic school too, and ours was sad. They banned dressing as another gender for Halloween, and went as far as to yell at and send a kid home for wearing a dress that went down to his ankles for his costume. They lightened up somewhat, but mostly because the students made enough of an outcry to really shoot down the teachers wanting the boy to go home. Two girls dressed as Mario and Luigi stood up to say if he goes, that it's unfair that they weren't sent home to change either, and made the teachers look like a bunch of embarrassed assholes.

So then those homophobes probably don't think of women too well. That might explain why homophobia and sexism go hand and hand most of the time.
