There's a lot of people forgotten in history. You're not ignorant just because you don't know who he is. Are you suppose to know who every nobel peace prize winners are? How many Americans knows who Aung San Suu Kyi is, for example?

And damnit, do you have to enter the captcha code for EVERY comment now? What happened to funnyjunk??

I think after a number of comments the captchas stop.

And no, not every Nobel peace winner, and it is sad how many great people do get forgotten by history.

Im just kind of pointing out a double standard here. I would hope King is known as a great man first and a part of American history second as well. Though I'm kind of just saying stuff.

The nobel peace prize is a joke. That comes from a Norwegian.

Well indeed it is a controversial award.

To rephrase the point, Martin Luther King is a very famous name in the history of peaceful protests against oppression, and was a martyr to his cause. Like I said, Americans would be called stupid for not knowing who Nelson Mandela or Gandhi were even though we as a general public don't actually know or learn much about either of their country's history.

Morgan Freeman: "Stop talking about it."
#50 - eros (02/08/2013) [-]
Actually, I've heard studies find that not talking to kids about race and racism causes a number of kids to develop racial preferences due to their preference to what looks like them and what their parents and family looks like.

I think what's important is not to ignore race altogether, but to acknowledge that differences regarding race are superficial.
#62 - N. Korean citizen (02/08/2013) [-]
It has more to do with interaction and what theyre raised to believe. That is why many interracial friendships developed in the pre civil rights era, and were quickly ended by the parents.
#64 - eros (02/08/2013) [-]
indeed, but as I said, I've heard of studies where people's fear of saying something to their kids ended up having the opposite effect intended, because kids feel more comfortable with what looks more like their family.

I dont care about how popular it is. I just hate the fact that I am incapable of walking into a shop or turning the radio on in my car without having to listen to some one style of music which I really hate.

I suppose my point is, people don't learn. If every generation spends all its time learning the exact same lesson, then how could mankind hope to advance?
