MSE has shit detection rates

chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php
MSE is the dotted white line. Compared to the others, it's shit.
User avatar #28 - asmodeu (01/08/2014) [-]
Viruses aren't the only threat a good anti-virus has to deal with.
I don't know what MSE has to offer, but a good anti-virus should at least have a decent firewall, be thorough when scanning files, contain a huge virus signature database and also be able to monitor all your computer's processes, especially the hidden ones.
All these take up resources, but offer good protection when they're implemented the right way.
#45 - stricklandpropane (01/08/2014) [-]
But MSE provides all of those.
I dislike update Tuesdays however.

MFW I have MSE, AVG and MB Chameleon.
#55 - chromebookfan (01/09/2014) [-]
You can't run multiple AV's you twat. It fucks up your system. MBAM is okay, but choose Avast or MSE.
User avatar #56 - adu (01/09/2014) [-]
MSE is for constant scanning and protection, AVG is for online detection, and MBAM only scans when I tell it to. They do not run at the same time, it's just layers of failsafes incase one of em fucks up. AVG helps me avoid, MSE takes care of most things, MBAM+C allows me to get rid of anything that somehow gets past.
#57 - chromebookfan (01/09/2014) [-]
If both MSE and AVG are running realtime protection, it will mess up your system. Comodo is best though. AV, HIPS, Web Filter, Firewall, Sandbox, Free. Me gusta.
User avatar #58 - adu (01/09/2014) [-]
Well my AVG expired a long time ago. In fact, I may not even have it on this laptop. MBAM and MSE is all I've ever needed.
#59 - chromebookfan (01/09/2014) [-]
I would recommend getting rid of MSE because it has horrible detection rates. The best free security programs are:

Avira
Comodo
Bitdefender
Avast
Panda Cloud
Zonealarm
Forticlient (for businesses)

I would also recommend using a program like Returnil or Sandboxie to isolate zero-day threats.
User avatar #60 - adu (01/09/2014) [-]
I've heard from reliable sources that MSE is all I really need in terms of early detection. I have MBAM Chameleon loaded on a USB, so I can recover from any virus ever, provided I have internet access and can use windows explorer, which is easy with safemode.
#61 - chromebookfan (01/09/2014) [-]
MSE has one of the lowest AV detection rates. It used to be different. It used to have a 98-99% detection rate, but now it's 85-90% at best. All of the programs I listed have detection rates of 98% or better. That 10% difference doesn't sound like much, but there are on average 50,000 new pieces of malware created every day. 10% of that is 5,000. Imagine being vulnerable to 5,000 pieces of malware per day!

I don't know who recommended MSE to you, but whoever it was needs to update their information.
User avatar #62 - adu (01/09/2014) [-]
Well a part of me thinks you're exaggerating, because even with one of the antiviruses you recommended I would (by your statistics) still get 500 different malware. If I run into any problems I just use MBAM... has a detection rate damn close to 100% from what I've seen. I don't go to unsecure sites anyways, so it's not like I'm going to come across the majority share of deviant viruses.
#63 - chromebookfan (01/09/2014) [-]
No, you would not be infected with all of the malware you are vulnerable to. But if you were to access a website with malware on it, you would be much more susceptible to infection with MSE. It doesn't detect nearly as much malware as most other AVs in the same category. And if you think you'll be able to run MBAM, I wish you the best of luck if you get infected with ransomware. You won't be able to run shit then.
User avatar #64 - adu (01/09/2014) [-]
#65 - chromebookfan (01/09/2014) [-]
Well actually

www.esecurityplanet.com/malware/sophos-malwarebytes-warn-of-cryptolocker-ransomware.html

More specifically, MalwareBytes has even stated that MBAM cannot remove crypto ransomware because the data is encrypted asymmetrically.

blog.malwarebytes.org/intelligence/2013/10/cryptolocker-ransomware-what-you-need-to-know/
User avatar #67 - adu (01/09/2014) [-]
Also this article states that "Users of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro are protected by malware execution prevention and blocking of malware sites and servers," which I have.
User avatar #66 - adu (01/09/2014) [-]
Well then just what kind of AV can remove crypto-ransomware?
#68 - chromebookfan (01/09/2014) [-]
No AV can remove crypto ransomware. That's my point. With MSE, you are more vulnerable to a cryptolocker installation. But with better realtime protection, you can block it before it even touches your computer.

With MBAM, unless you have paid for the pro version and have it installed and actively protecting your computer in realtime, it will not protect you. Furthermore, MBAM is not an antivirus and should not be trusted as a first line of defense. It is an anti-spyware application, which does not work the same way antivirus does.

The best thing to do, as I have been saying all along, is to install a better antivirus. Avast, Avira, Bitdefender and Panda Cloud are all lighter and faster than MSE, and all have better detection rates.
User avatar #69 - adu (01/09/2014) [-]
Well I do have MBAM Pro, but the article said this cryptolocker was sent through email attachments. Fortunately, I don't receive emails from anyone who is retarded, and I don't open random attachments either. Still, I see your point about prevention, but I feel like I'd need to do some more research first.
#70 - chromebookfan (01/09/2014) [-]
It's also spread via botnet websites.

Here is a chart of detection rates of major AV vendors. You'll find that MSE (the dotted white line) is one of the lowest:

chart.av-comparatives.org/chart1.php
User avatar #71 - adu (01/09/2014) [-]
I'll look into it. As of right now I'm pretty low-risk. The sites I frequent have good security, and ABP keeps me from clicking on anything accidentally. I don't like leaving gaps, though, so I'll definitely look into disabling MSE and getting Avast.
#41 - redwrench (01/08/2014) [-]
do u even mbam
User avatar #42 - adu (01/08/2014) [-]
I used MB as short for MalwareBytes, but I guess that mbam makes more sense as it's on plenty of their executable files.

Also not sure why two people decided my comment was bad.
