It really is a terrible feeling when you put a lot of energy and time into something that Isint any fun or anything to be proud of. I've designed/made a few board games myself (Heavily based off other games) And they were all disappointments.

That sounds like a really fun hobby! Have you had any success or will this be your first? ;)

Not with that attitude. Have you finished designs? Do they work? Then you've succeeded. You can't just expect your first game to be something really good. If you've designed something that works than you've got something to be proud of.

I'll usually just design a section of a game or a small game, or how a mechanic that interests me works. Sometimes I actually make them but I enjoy the actual design process. I don't need someone to play my game to enjoy the process It is still really nice when people enjoy your game . I've made a few complete games, I've made a few partial games to test pieces of.

Then your clarifications
-K, didn't expect it to be for profit. It would be cool if there was a game with a set of rules on how to make cards so anyone can contribute to the card pool. Have to be tight rules though, otherwise it would break. I have a thing from an rts I designed that might work to that end, with some adjustment
- If you credit them and it's licensed for the use you put it to, they won't mind, most will likely welcome it.
- Sounds like fun, getting a picture and making a card off of it.

I have to thank you with all my heart for posting such a detailed comment, it actually helped me change my view on how to explain the game. I guess I was just so excited to get my idea out for others to see, I tried to add way too much details into one post. I guess if I want to get the mechanics down I will have to "Spoon feed" The details little by little aha! I have had quite a while to think of the mechanics of the game and forget that not everyone...no-one else knows how to play. But the way you described the layers was excelent and is something I will take into consideration with Future updates!

I should have read this before posting Update#2 because this would have deff changed the way I described things, I posted some rules of the cards in this post, and only assumed people would be able to understand, but the fact that it's a new game with uknown rules thats a little hard.

In my next "update" Ill try my best to explain everything

-Summoning
-Basic combat
-Attack effects
-Special attacks
- and status effects

And hopefully thi will give everyone a bit more insite to what I am trying to shine upon the world!

As fo Help, the whole reason I posted the card game here is to show everyone an idea they can use/ contribute to! as you can tell, I may not be the best at describing things but I do what I can ;) So I guess the choice is up to you! if you would like to join my "Team" of me. I know the feeling, I do game design for a hobby and sometimes I'll get an idea and flesh it out into something huge but can't describe to others, or misses something at the basic level. That's why I worked really hard to define my concept of layered complexity, because if you look at any game, you can see some semblance of it. In just about any good game there's a simple set of rules that are all you need to start. So figuring out your layer one helps to explain the game to others as well as making sure your game has a solid foundation It's really awkward and hard to fix if you're halfway through the design and realise your basic rules don't work. and I used the other layers as a way of placing importance on ideas. I'll start designs from all over, one time I designed one for the sole purpose of showing off a single mechanic.

So having a way of placing importance is really good in design, because you'll come up with all sorts of ideas you'll hate to get rid off, so being able to say "This one is more important of the two, so the other is removed" is so much easier.

The new rules you posted were easier to follow than before.

Being able to put those 5 basic concepts down is a really good start.

Sure, I'll help if you'll have me. I haven't worked with someone else on a card game before, sounds fun.

#68 - epicalania (12/02/2015) [-]
I read your part 2 and you're getting the complexity layered better.
I'll use mtg since it's the one I know best I've played the other two but played mtg the most .

So in mtg the basic rules, the absolute basic rules, are:
Play lands
Get mana
pay mana cost for creatures
attack with creatures
subtract power from toughness
if toughness is 0 die.

Which simplifies into 3 main segments:
get creatures
attack
see if dead/deal damage

Now with just this, you can play mtg. This is far from all the game has, but this bit is essential in almost all games We've all seen one of those decks which have mess with everything, I've played many mirror matches of them (those are really fun but confusing)

This could be considered layer 1.
layer 2 would be combat mechanics This can really change however you want, mostly the idea is that for any 1 layer, you can use it without anything that isn't in a previous layer. So after layer 1, theres about 500 layers that could be layer 2, but we're going basic basic examples. . Combat mechanics: ie first strike, double strike, flying, etc the basic stuff
To do layer 2, you need what you get from layer 1, but you know layer 1 in and of itself, you just know it and it's easy to learn and use. Then you have layer 2, which you learn as an addition, it doesn't confuse you from the basic mechanics. And when you get to higher layers, you know layer 2 and while they might affect layer 2, you still just know it.

So flying, means only certain creatures can block you. This alters layer 1 but doesn't, at a fundemental level, subvert it, or really change it much at all.

So maybe layer 3 would be the creature effects like flash, or flanking or "can block creatures with flying".
These change combat again, and can affect both layer 1 and 2, but since you already know layers 1 and 2, you aren't confused by layer 3 since you can learn it by itself.

So when you layer your complexity, I'm not saying your game is too simple. I'm saying have a look at your rules. Is there a simple set of fundamentals that you need for just about every game? That'd be layer 1. Make sure people can easily understand layer 1, this is your foundation. You don't need or want complexity. It's later on that complexity is added.

I can help if you want, and you started doing it naturally, it's a simple concept but paying attention to it really can affect how playable a game is. Ever played beyond Earth? You start off and theres all these resources you've never heard of before. It can get very confusing because, in other games, you know the resource and intrinsically know what sort of thing they're for, wood is for building, gold for buying etc etc. Imagine that sort of stuff happening with a card game.

Imagine someone gave you their high end tournament mtg deck and tried to teach you with it. You'd get confused because you're given all that complexity right at GO. Now when you first learnt any of those card games I'm sure someone gave you the very basics first. How to play creatures and attack. That's all simple and once you know it you can play, no matter how simple your deck and strategy, you can play. Thats what your first layer should be.
So your first layer would be a simple, understandable set of rules that once you know, you can play. I like you melee/ranged mechanic but I'd keep that out of layer 1.
So your basic rules would pretty much be:
- declare attack & what type of attack
- roll, do maths
- figure out damage
- next turn
expand on that however you want, but if you can isolate 1 core set of rules that you can play with, your game will be so much better for it. You can find the concept in just about every good game.

'Layering complexity' isn't an official way of saying it, it's my way to explaining it. I love game design and I like teaching, so this is how =Continued=

"The point of art is to have a product at the end which is art. I"
Nope that's the point of production. Art by definition is a form of expression, you'd be hard pressed to cherry pick an example where it isn't defined as so.

And in this case the expression is "I think this looks cool"
If art, by definition, is a form of expression. Then the point of art is to have a product at the end which is art. To not have that as a point is an invalid concept, otherwise the point of art would not be to have art at the end. Which would mean no expression has taken place.
To end with a product which meets the definition of that product, you must complete the requirements for that product. So to produce art, expression must occur.

Or in simpler terms, if the point of art is to end with art, then the process of art is to express yourself in an artistic way. Which would result in art having occured/been created

That is odd... You guys should know by now, with the advent of internet, that Asia Minor is Turkey, and has not been call otherwise in forever...

Are you sure Australia classifies Arabs as Arab race?

That would make Australia seem kind of silly....

Now, I am a HUGE race proponent. In fact, I think the 3-4 race thing is silly. I am German, with a large Nordic stock. My son, who is half Asian, is more Alpine than me! Genetics are funny. But I believe there should be many more racial categories.

However, there are official designations.

Does Australia really have "Arab" as a race? Because that would set Australia apart from the rest of the world...

As for S. America, maybe Natives are predominant. I do not know, to be honest. I do know the "natives" have their origin in Asia. And that many nation have a lot of whites. As high as 80%. Or course, if you are half white mestizo, you are considered white. Sort of like Obama is considered black, even though his Mother is white...

BTW-While we seem to disagree on points, I appreciate your in-depth writing and cordiality. Both rarities online and in the real world.

I know that Asia minor is turkey and a few surrounding areas, but they're very minor and hav e changed through history depending on who made the maps but a lot of people here just use one thing to denote a larger group of things. Sydney can mean the city, the region, just about every from the central to south coasts, it can also mean just a part of the city, or it can even include Penrith (which is a city in it's own right).

arabs are a race. Sometimes it's used culturally, as cultural races are often more important than genealogical or linguistical divisions in Australia. But yes, we consider people on the Arabian peninsula to be separate from people from the European P. Peninsula, who are themselves made up of the various races such as germanic, nordic, italian based on the peninsula, not the country , slavic. some that are sometimes included but othertimes lumped with others are: Gallic and gypsy for example .

And 'white' in these terms are more or less the European peoples descendant of christiandom, so not semitic, nordic peoples, having been converted to christiandom, are white as well.

I don't think it does make us silly. There is a difference, you're own comments have shown that you understand that arabs can be considered their own peoples and that they're not very hard to define the groupings. It makes us aware of the fact that Europeans are different from those of the arabian peninsula and that there are many differences that solidify the separation.

The official designations have no, as far as I am aware, global consensus, in Australia, groups will pick and choose their own designations to best suit their needs, even in the government. Universities will often use multiple designations in discussions, just making sure that everyone knows which designation and can easily find information of them.

As you should be able to determine from above, having arab as a separate race is largely dependant on the needs of the current classification, but yes. They are usually considered their own race. Especially in government stuff, although this does change sometimes. And I'm fairly certain that most countries on the arabian peninsula consider arab as it's own race, with white being very much considered a separate race, sometimes considered further from arab than asian or black.

If 80% of a country is white, the natives are not predominant.
I really think it's stupid that they consider somebody a race because of one parent but never the white parent, and never both in statistics. Shouldn't it be decided based on which race they resemble more gentically? Or which one they think they are? Or maybe just both, at least as far as statistics?

I'm glad you appreciate logical discourse, and I'm thankful you structure your points clearly and concisely.

MY RESONCE

hurple does rhyme and is a word tho i wasnt talking about the rhyme with purple jsut hunt and month
chilver is a noun so allthough it rhymes i can make an object name it durple and it rhymes with purple so nouns are usually left out.
millionth is another one that rhymes but its borderline a forced rhyme
this is because millionths rhyming sound is IONTH while month is just ONTH

You didnt mention them but I included them as they are common ones to use with the 'fact' of certain words not having any rhymes, and as chilver is a common noun and not a proper noun it is usually counted, millionth is not a forced rhyme nor a borderline forced rhyme as the correct classical English pronunciation is mill-i-onth, with the onth rhyming with month, mill-i-onth.
Thank you

well there you go i have no real arguements against you so i can no longer keep the conversation going (agree or not its always good to point out reasons against)
so you win

Thank you a value that you were willing to actually put your argument forward in this, i welcome any and all reasonable arguments to anything i say, this is reasonable as I have seen this sort of misconception alot and it may eventually become a large part of English, but for now it is still the same.

i believed you from the start but you know i cant jsut let you walk all over my comment
the issue i see with millionth is that when i say it at least i do the ionth as 1 syllable so when i say it it doesnt rhyme quite right so i say its a forced ryme because by definition it rhymes when u say it a little off (so if i spaced the i out)
the issue with most rhyming facts is just theres too many words and you cant really decide the rules of rhyming as i said i can make an object name it horange and it rhymes with orange so does that count

Like I said many people do pronounce it that way and I feel it is very likely it will become the proper pronunciation soon, English seems to be slowly evolving into a very fast language.
User avatar #20 to #19 - itemexchange (10/13/2013) [-]
well english is a language based off other languages...words get added in all the time from other languages thats why origin is so useful in a spelling bee
User avatar #21 to #20 - epicalania (10/13/2013) [-]
True, it also evolves from its own words, both in useful ways (don't can't) and not so useful ways (lol, swag) although one could argue that the concept of contractions itself came from the Romans (Latin is the oldest language I know that has contractions, for example hodie is a contraction of hoc die).
User avatar #22 to #21 - itemexchange (10/13/2013) [-]
im pretty sure 80% of latin words are pretty much 2 regular words put together to mean somehting new based on the words
User avatar #23 to #22 - epicalania (10/13/2013) [-]
NO, there are many compound words (which are different from contractions and many older languages have them as well) but contractions are alot rarer, I am a second year Latin student and the only one I can think of right now is hodie

idk much about language all i know is whenever im learning something they always go
