Many scientist think that we actually have more senses, but they have become useless to us so we don't know how to use them or perceive them anymore, kind of like the appendix.
As you may know, many dogs react to earthquakes before they even happen. This could be caused by a huge static buildup due to the friction of the plates, which animals can sense. We, however, can't sense it, maybe due to the fact that we're constantly surrounded by static electricity in the modern day.
Some monks have been said to unlock and learn the ways of these senses, I don't know if it's true or not.

tl;dr: if you want to experience a new sense become a monk

pic only slightly related

this is sad but true. Even if someone gain a new sense, if they were disabled at a young age, they may have never developed the part of the brain that processes that sense, causing them to experience the stimulation but not be able to fully understand it.

TL: DR,
Using these procedures to return a lost sense is good, but using this to give someone a sense they never had can end horribly. There are many accounts of blind/deaf people killing themselves after gaining sight/hearing because the stimulation was too foreign to them

I read a story about a man that was blind ever since he was born.
One day they developed a way to cure him, and so they did.
The man killed himself a month later, because this new sense was so overwhelming he couldn't handle it.
