Heat does not care about gravity. Gravity can do it's thing for the rest of eternity, and if there is no matter to absorb the heat it won't matter. The heat death of the universe is not a temporary state. It's just an infinitely boring non-existance filled with random hisses of slightly higher band radiation, and eventually, even those will stop.
User avatar #56 - bloodmoon (2 hours ago) [-]
But that is assuming matter disappears in the Heat Death, it does not. Heat Death is simply a state in which all energy and heat in the universe is equal throughout and therefore cannot sustain processes that consume energy, however nowhere have I read that states Gravity is a process that consumes energy. Gravity is a force that pulls energy and matter together, and when matter collides with other matter it creates energy.

Another writer goes further; "It has long been known that gravity is important for keeping the universe out of thermal equilibrium. Gravitationally bound systems have negative specific heat—that is, the velocities of their components increase when energy is removed. ... Such a system does not evolve toward a homogeneous equilibrium state. Instead it becomes increasingly structured and heterogeneous as it fragments into subsystems."[17] In other words, this writer is saying that when gravity is taken into account (which Kelvin did not), a prediction of heat death is not justified.

I don't know what those abbreviations mean, but I'm assuming my hard drive should still work seeing as it's a new SSD (The only other hardware failure I've had was my old SSD failing because I didn't know you weren't supposed to defragment them.) And either way, I'd rather have a computer that boots with no hard drive than a computer with a billion petabytes that can't even start.

Anyway, that's a big help, thanks a lot!

No, because that is only a theory, and in 100 years we may have a better understanding of things that would make the heat death of the universe seem silly.
User avatar #39 - leightonsolomon (3 hours ago) [-]
Yeah, but that will happen in trillions and trillions and trillions of years. It is literally so far away that whatever life is left will likely be so advanced that they could travel to a different universe to escape the demise of theirs.

I had an idea for a book series that has a race of people who have master the ability to "jump start" universes that have undergone heat death. I just need to know if it's feasible to restart a universe, and how you would go about doing it.

That part is the better part of a decade old and everything else (aside from the processor) has been upgraded. I was playing Alien Isolation on highest settings before it died, so it's really the only thing that needs replacing.

Anybody can build a computer from scratch. If you spare us your specs, we can tell you what's compatible and give you recommendations, as-well. Geek Squad will do the same thing, but charge you an astronomical cost while they replace things with the most expensive hardware possible.

Is there more that I need to know/give other than just the model name written on each piece of hardware? Because part of the problem is that I'm unsure of many of my specs and with the broken motherboard, it won't boot to run dxdiag.
