I have a book called "Japanese From Zero1" which has some basic grammar and how to write hiragana, but I tend to forget the tasks I just did and end up having a book where I have written stuff I don't know. Same problem as I had in Spanish class

The most valuable sources I used while learning were:

Genki text + exercise books (to get started, depending on your level you can skip these)
Remembering the Kanji (Teaches an excellent method for learning the kanji)
Japanese Grammar Guide - Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese (covers basically all the important grammar rules, learned a fuckload from this)
Jisho.org (English-Japanese online dictionary, has neat functions such as manually writing the kanji you're looking for or searching by radicals)
Anki (Flash Card Program, definite necessity for learning how to read/write kanji)
2000 + 6000 core vocabulary deck (flash card deck for Anki, name is self-explanatory)

Writing is a pain in the ass which I still struggle with, but using those sources and ~2-3 years you can get fluent enough to read novels with complete comprehension. After 6 months to a year you should know more than enough to understand spoken conversations almost completely.
