Tax works on a scale in all countries. Using my country's scale for example, for the first R181 900 (£9753) it's 18%, for the amount above that up to R284 100 ( £15231) it's 26%, then up to R393 200 ( £21081) it's 31% etc.

And after that amount is worked out, you get tax rebates which decreases the amount you need to pay. Basic rebate is R13257 ( £711), if you're above 65 you get an extra R7407 ( £397) rebate, and above 75 you get an extra R2466 ( £132) rebate.
