The storyline yes, and just like how "light novels" like twilight are made specifically for girls, you can argue that some points of SAO's novels were made to pander to "book otakus"
also the anime could've just ignored the romantic angle and focused more on the gaming aspect, if they're not going to be faithful on the gallons of built up semen that flowed into Asuna, then why be faithful to the romance at all?

Honestly man, It's tough to change from being like that, especially if you were brought up in a lifestyle where being selfish was a requirement to thrive.
"learning to give" isn't enough, because that isn't inherently the issue. Giving because you want people to like you isn't enough. What you need to focus on is empathy and ethics. It's easy to practice, but hard to do. Basically, every time you meet someone, you have to think what it would be like to be them. At the simplest level, what would it be like if they did to you what you are going to/about to do to them....would you like that or would it make you feel happy or would it be in your best interest. If no, then re-evaluate your actions or words. Once you get good at this, you need to change the focus from yourself or how you would feel, and start trying to interpret how someone else may feel based off of their feelings (Ie. based off their culture, religion, race, class etc.)
Don't get me wrong, this is a challenging thing to do, but practicing it is the first step, and expect you will rarely be correct, but even in attempting you will become a better and more liked person.
