I salute you for having an unpopular opinion my friend.
You don't deserve all the red thumbs you got.

It's not even an unpopular opinion, why do you think he's so successful? Funnyjunk just like to be "le edgy face"

I don't mind him. Half the community has never heard a song by him. I think he's a very talented rapper, I don't give a shit about his message, I like his voice, he's good.

I personally don't like Lil Wayne or rap music in general, but I respect you for voicing your opinion against the bandwagon

Most people hate lil wayne without even listening to his music, they just jump on the "reddit says he's bad so he must be" bandwagon that gets regurgitated upon funnyjunk. Ask a musically educated person their opinion on lil wayne and their likely response will be something like "back in 2007 he appeared to be a promising breath of fresh air in a stale hip-hop industry however his albums have gotten progressively worse since." Ask someone from reddit, funnyjunk, 9gag or even /b/ and you'll get: "lol he's a faggot he can't rap lol! I don't even like rap so i dunno what I'm basing that on lol! I like everything but rap and country lol!! kurt cobain forever lol ftw lol!"

did and i've watched lil wayne since 2007. he's actually one of the main reasons i lost fate in hip-hop... the best i could rate him is "meh"

well there's your problem, while you enjoyed older rap; im assuming 2pac, biggie, dre etc you haven't adjusted well to the new-age stylings. It's like when people only listen to metallica and iron maiden and don't even touch newer metal because they're put off by bands like slipknot and linkin park.

i just don't listen to music that doesn't have a message. and if "lick my lollipop" or "make it rain" is the best he can come up with... well, i don't really think i want to adapt to these new-age stylings

The same can be said about a lot of "good music." Also you can't rely on only the lyrics having a message due to the vast abundance of lyricless instrumental music around.

well, i personally don't touch that "good music". the only problem is that lil wayne doesn't put any real effort in his songs... and i believe that's pretty self-evident
User avatar

He spends a fair amount of time finding samples for his beats, practising his flow and writing somewhat "decent" lyrics. Also, if I may ask, what do you consider good music?

well, after i quit listening to hip-hop i turned my attention towards older music, whatever that may be. so i slowly went towards rock music and i was absolutely blown out of my mind. there is just no way to compare the effort old artists put in to combine what is enjoyable to listen to with what is complex in music. so i sticked with bands and artists such as django reinhardt, jimi hendrix, miles davis, alice in chains, aerosmith, bonobo, tool, al green, the police etc. i tried listening to newer bands but i was kind of disappointed because they mainly sound the same, although some such as wolfmother, the arctic monkeys and muse really stand out. i said that i was in a band to stress the fact that there is no way lil wayne's effort could even come close to what a band has to do in order to write good songs, and there many things which have to do with synchronization between members and the complexity of the songs themselves, not to mention the individual effort every member of the band has to make in order for all of them to reach a satisfying level

Firstly, Tool would be considered a new band and bonobo is pretty new as well. Also if you think making beats is easy then you are grossly misinformed, and I believe you are probably exaggerating the effort it takes to create music in your band. I understand that it's not easy but generally when the melody of a song is lead by a single guitar the rest comes pretty easily. Furthermore while the bands you mentioned were "good music" it's difficult to see how you can so easily put them on a pedestal above other types of music. While alice in chains produce many emotionally fueled and powerful songs they failed to construct well flowing albums which ended up sounding like a collection of disjointed singles. And aerosmith can't be seen as anything more than a cock-rock band whose success was fueled by their half-assed rock ballads.

this debate can really go on forever. i truly believe it's all about the message you send with your music, which is supposed to be a way of expressing art and one's feelings along with it, and i'm sure the bands i mentioned managed to do so quite well. i actually believe every album alice in chains has released with layne staley has a touch of its own, and more importantly, every song individually has that sheer raw power and energy i'm looking for when i listen to rock. fairly enough "facelift" was indeed the first album and didn't really have an identity of its own. "dirt" is just brutal in my opinion, and "tripod" is that dark, grim-themed album which closes the curtain on the band's activity. as for aerosmith, they have a special place in my hearth not because of those crappy new ballads, but because of their first albums which were mainly what rock'n'roll was supposed to be at that time.
