Exactly, high school students don't have practice in engineering, only knowledge. FIRST is about giving students practice, and that is taken away when mentors do all the work

It doesn't matter how much raw knowledge they have, its about experience. You can read how to play a violin for 100 years, but you'll never play in the NY Phil.

Because a sixteen-year-old with part of a high school education and next to no experience in robotics and programming is going to make something even close to what a professional with a doctorate can do? This is like having Joe DiMaggio playing Little League in place of a nine-year-old and claiming 'that's life.' This is a regulated competition of peers, not a fucking execution. I get your point that kids these days need to suck it up, but that's not the issue here. They're not showcasing the kids' talents or designs at all, it's basically the engineering equivalent of steroids, except worse, since steroids will hit a limit much faster than hiring someone who builds robots for a living.

Dude setting aside all the theatrics, you can learn anything you want on the internet, the internet is one great pool of knowledge. I myself have an extensive digital library on robotics, from the most basic electronics and programing to advanced robots, bionics, microcontrollers, industrial machines, even the creation of simple and advanced space crafts, every single formula, technique and piece of information you need is somewhere out there readily available. You just have to have the drive and look. Sure they got it easier with their money and influence, sure it's a shitty thing to do and in the long run it'll do them more bad than good but that's just life.
People need to get over the whole equality/equity thing and just give their all for something they love.

"don't cry about unfairness or whatever"
are you fucking retarded?

the point of the competition is that the high-school students do it, not 30+ year old faggots with lots of experience who got paid for it

high-school students have fuckton to study/hobbies/other problems to deal with and most likely an 18-yo shit is not an expert on the matter.

there ARE times to complain and this is one.
User avatar #56 - heartlessrobot (03/30/2015) [-]
It's next to impossible for an amateur to beat a professional in a competition that involves zero luck or chance. Hell, the professional would have to fuck up on purpose.
#24 - anonymous (03/30/2015) [-]
Getting fucked over by people with connections is life, yeah, but FIRST is supposed to be a showcase and competition of the students' ideas, what goes on now is straight-up bullshit. I don't give a fuck what Billy's daddy's friend from Boston Scientific with 23 years of experience making extreme-environment rovers can do, I want to see what Billy can do.
User avatar #25 - eklipsbrate (03/30/2015) [-]
Point is you ain't trying hard enough kid,you gotta do everything in your power to make the best fucking robot possible, they're not paying off the judges, they're not sucking dicks backstage so they can win. They're bringing in amazing robot designs, sure someone else had the idea, maybe even built it for them, but that doesn't fucking matter.Yeah it's not fair, nothings fucking fair, life is just one big chaotic mess and it's GONNA push you down,it's GONNA make you wanna quit,it's GONNA want you to stay in your house and to nothing,be nobody. Does that mean you have to take it?
HELL NO,you GONNA SPIT IN LIFES FACE AND SAY: FUCK YOU I'M GONNA BE SOMEBODY;I'M GONNA BE GREAT;AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN FUCKING DO ABOUT IT.
