I actually used to do this, write in a vertical mirror, and right to left across the page. But I'm almost certain only a very small number of people would continue to form their letters right to left into adulthood, as it's just not efficient or helpful once you write left to right in the way that you're describing.
You don't smudge while you're drawing a letter, you smudge as you move you're hand across the page to write the next word.
