Roligas right about all of the law stuff. Basically Florida is chill but NJ is a nanny state. As for what gun you want, this is going to depend on you. You can always just take tips from people online and then go make a purchase but that isn't always the best method. (I will say this though, if you're set on getting a handun for HD, get a full size handgun unless you have babby hands. Then get a compact.)
Here's my method for deciding on a new gun:
1. Research different options online. If you don't already know the mechanics, basic operation, cleaning, prices, ammo differences, etc. then this is where you need to start. (Feel free to ask questions here)
2. Figure out what your price range is and explore options from highest price to lowest price. It's always nice to get a deal, but for the most part, you get what you pay for. There's a reason SIGs and HK are more expensive than Hi-Point and Taurus.
3. Once you've narrowed it down to a few different options it's time to get hands on with the options you're looking at. If you have a friend who has the gun, have him take you to the range to try it out. If you can't do that, some ranges will have rental guns you can test out. At the very least you need to find an LGS that is carrying the gun you're interested in and hold it and get a feel for it. Don't be afraid to ask questions while holding it. Most gun store employees (and I say most, not all) are more than happy to help you, especially if you're a first timer.
4. Buy said gun.
6. Shoot Dindus

There is no license required to own a firearm in the state of Florida. If you plan on taking the gun with you to NJ then you need to get an NJ license for an NJ approved gun. Take everything your friend says with a grain of salt. I've noticed that every person from the military who has ever tried to talk firearms with me is only knowledgeable on what small arms they served with and little to nothing else.
