#50 - OMG. I know this pain. I drive trains here in Aus for a living…  [+] (7 new replies) 12/17/2014 on I love my country +2

What sort of trains do you drive?

Narrow gauge grain in W.A.

I've always wondered about being a train driver there. How long are you driving for at any given shift? What are the cabs like, are they air-conditioned for those brutal WA summers? And how long do those things take to load/unload?

sorry, curious
User avatar #58 - eatherbreather (12/17/2014) [-]
Typically 12hr shifts, the cabs are cramped, noisy, squeaky, rattly piles of shit. The air con kinda works when it wants to but not on the very hottest days - it doesn't work at all then. The heaters are entirely useless in winter. Loading 52 wagons can take as little as 3 hours on a good day depending on the siding and the availability of the commodity going into them and as much as 36 hrs depending on breakdowns - train related or not. Unloading is much the same. It's a good job spoiled by crap equipment.
User avatar #64 - anaphase (12/17/2014) [-]
Not surprising though. And if it's anywhere away from a main city, the pollies don't want to know (rural Vic here; "what, you want a...what? A train? Oh ok, here look, we'll give Melbourne a cricket ground!".

How's the pay, though? And how do you even get into such a niche job like that?
User avatar #67 - eatherbreather (12/17/2014) [-]
Saw a bit of rural Vic last year. Was in Boxwood for a coupla weeks. I saw a bit of your rail out that way. Outwardly it looks much the same as ours. Was a bit dismayed by some of the locals telling me they never bother to stop or look for trains before the drive over the crossings. Not many trains run out that way admittedly (last year a few were run for harvest apparently) but still it's not a real clever attitude to adopt.

Same problem here, railway was quietly sold off a number of years ago in an absolutely corrupt (i.e. Tender process? What tender process?) but otherwise apparently unassailable deal and allowed to decay. Pay is good, not as much as the mines up north but still good. Got into it when a mate told me there was to be traineeships going so I applied and got one of four that was going 9+years ago.

I don't understand why they call them roofies... You're more likely to wind up on the floor than the roof.

Use them to change the color of your nail polish
User avatar #25 - lukecrant (09/04/2014) [-]
That was actually a fake story. They students that made the nail polish had bad results, it didn't respond to most of the chemicals used in date rape drugs and it reacted to harmless compounds as well... So it was pretty shit.
#79 - anticitezenone (09/04/2014) [-]
User avatar #121 - sciencexplain (09/04/2014) [-]
I can confirm it was a failure. I have a friend who tested it at one of our Uni labs for his paper and he could bypass it with about 3 drugs. It doesn't react to all, only about 4 or 5. It's better than nothing, but the reaction to some compounds could cause complications. It needs engineering and modification first before it could be sold, as it could potentially result in the prosecution of innocent people who didn't actually spike drinks.
#148 - anonymous (09/04/2014) [-]
I too can confirm it is a failure. I'm groggy, my butt is sore, and all my nail polish is gone
