The only games I've ever pirated are skyrim and minecraft. I tell people how awesome they are, which may lead to them to buy the game themselves, when they otherwise might not. I plan on buying legitimate copies when I have a job and make money. This is how I justify pirating, and my moral conscience is sound.

He isn't coming close to robbery because he isn't taking anything the company who made the game had. He couldn't of afforded the game so he wouldn't of gotten it.
Now, by pirating the game he is simply duplicating (not taking) the product in question, and the company loses nothing, as he couldn't of supported them even if he wanted too.
So basically he gains one product for free, and the company gains, nor loses anything at all

I'm sick of trying to explain to people who want to justify to themselves that they are stealing a product. The only arguments people can put forward are those you relative to tangible products, items such as cars or watches which are physical and are clearly defined. In the instance of a product like a car theft refers to taking the car. Movies and other forms of entertainment though are not tangible objects you hold, they are something you 'expend' so to speak. its something where taking a copy online is theft because you are enjoying and using the product without paying for it. its the equivalent of stealing a car off the assembly line because its a copy of the design.
The argument that he wouldn't have gotten the game anyway because he couldn't afford it is ridiculous because it doesn't address the fact that it is still illegal, he having no right to something he hasn't purchased. By this logic I could walk into a Rolex store and walk out with a new watch. If something isn't affordable to you then it is a luxury that you save to obtain just as you would something more expensive like a computer.

1) This is purely speculation on your part, no one will know what he would have done. If he honestly has zero ability to ever save enough money to purchase the game, which will get cheaper as time passes, then he must be a Somalian peasant.
2) Again this is like walking to a lolly store and walking out with a bag of lollies and placating the store owner by saying, it's ok mate, i would never have bought them anyway.

1) It is equally speculation by saying he currently or in the near future will be able to purchase the game, despite the fact you gain money over time. Perhaps his budget isn't in his control. I could sit and give alot more points to how it may not be as simple as "you get money next week (fuck, even that is speculation your parts) but i bet those points are also speculation and to you null and void, so nothing to do but move from it.
2) "Again this is like walking to a lolly store and walking out with a bag of lollies and placating the store owner by saying, it's ok mate, i would never have bought them anyway."
More like never meeting the store owner nor the maker of the candy, and making exact duplicates of their candy from your lollie maker machine, becuase you cant afford the lollies.
I should clear something up here. Im not trying to defend piracy in the sense it isnt in someway wrong. I've never, not once in my life, have pirated any software, simply becuase i can afford it and buying a game isnt in anyway irrelevant to me (unlike OP). The reason im defending OP here is becuase he has a reason for pirating, and he isnt hurting the game makers at all, eh, ill say "much" to please you. Now, those assholes that can afford the games, those people directly hurt game makers. their sale exists, the have the means, however because of piracy the game makers lose a very real and very existent sale. That's how piracy is wrong, But not by the definition of thievery or robbery. This is the big point i am trying to make that you seem to ignore. I know it can be wrong, i know its illegal, but it isn't theft and it isnt robbery.

"he has a reason for pirating, and he isnt hurting the game makers at all"
Everybody has a reason for pirating, pirating for somebody with immediate means to pay for it is the same motivation as someone who doesn't at present have the ability to buy it. To avoid paying. The difference is that while one person can buy it now if he wants, the other such as OP has to plan and implement some saving scheme to get it over a long term period. No one is forcing him to play the game, this is a conscious decision on his part consume the product and financial inability to doesn't make it morally acceptable for him to obtain it without payment.
I understand your reasoning and I don't think either one of us is ever going to convince the other so Ill agree to disagree, its not like he is going to be charged with theft anyway despite the fact he committed a crime. So I'm going to drop it.
