Shock is a shit card though. When you're out of slots for lightning bolt, you run rift bolt, lava spike, lightning helix, and snapcaster mage to make the spells reusable, restoration angel to repeat snapcaster mages, and deathrite shaman to exile your burn spells to cause life loss

Rift bolt = two turns to use, lava spike = not removal, lightning helix= 2-color, snapcaster = more mana, angel = more mana.
God it's like you're not even thinking about how this works.

It's almost like I'm thinking about what the tier one burn deck list is because that is what I'm doing Also, if it's removal you care about, that's why pillar of flame is in the sideboard of burn decks. Exiling stuff like voice of resurgence and kitchen finks and murderous redcap, etcetera, is much more important than the fact that shock is an instant. But in the mainboard, burn to win is the point so lava spike is a very important piece of the win condition. granted, I'm just talking about burn. Lightning bolt is run in a wide variety of decks, primarily burn, aggro, and Jeskai/Grixis control

Pillar of flame is a sorcery.
btw there are white cards cards that can prevent a lot of red damage.
things that can't be prevented get counterspell'd.
That's why my Mardu only has two burn cards.

I am aware it is a sorcery. Exiling is so relevant that it being a sorcery is well worth it. Magma spray is a good option, but not in burn since it is not able to target players. No tier one modern or legacy deck runs any white card that prevents red damage, and all those burn spells number much more to equal to the amount of counterspells run by any blue deck, plus the benefit of them being reusable through snapcaster/restoration angel and pseudo-reusable through deathrite although he's banned now puts you well beyond the reach of any amount of counterspells. I should know. I had lightning helix cast against me five times in one game at a grand prix while I was playing hard control And mardu is not a burn deck. It is midrange with win conditions of large or highly aggressive creatures, using burn primarily to apply pressure and remove creatures, so that's not particularly relevant to what I'm referring to. besides, as I said, the list of cards I gave is an established tier one modern deck that wins grand prixs and pro tours. Can't argue with results

What about the best "burn" card ever: guttersnipe

He was good in standard izzet/grixis counterburn, pain in the ass really. Shit beyond it though, except certain edh decks, mostly izzet builds. My personal favorite burn spell is electrolyze, but that's because I'm mostly a control player, not a burn player. Even though electrolyze only does two damage, the ability to divide it often means killing two creatures in modern, except tron creatures and goyf, and it replaces itself in your hand, a vital thing in any control deck, hence why cryptic command, remand, and shadow of doubt are so popular.

The only burn that I use in my Mardu is Massive Raid, for the ability to get so many creatures, then screw everything up with him and some Foundry Champions.
#71 - whiterabit (01/15/2015) [-]
Back when it was standard not that that apparently matters to you since massive raid and foundry champion aren't standard anymore either burn at the stake was a burn win condition. Similar to massive raid, except it does up to three times the damage, and the mana cost isn't an issue, since it's five and I can see you're already going up to at least six cmc, unless your mana fixing has a hard time producing triple red. Plus through hordling outburst, raise the alarm, goblin rabblemaster, or a large assortment of other mardu token spawning cards, it can easily do well over lethal damage. But yeah, it is a card more for casual play than tournament play, but so are massive raid and foundry champion, so no real problem there

That was actually a pretty spectacular card in scars/zendikar standard against stoneforge decks because killing squadron hawks before they became equipped was ridiculously important, and some decks didn't have enough ways to do it. And in innistrad/scars standard one damage was still very relevant due to the high usage of champion of the parish, delver of secrets, and stromkirk noble and the need to kill any of those three before they got any bigger. This is also why fume spitter was important in black decks
