It gives people hope and as someone with empathy and a heart (as well as being an atheist) I can be sensitive enough to not force my shit down other peoples throats aslong as they pay the same respects to my beliefs. I don't mock them or call them stupid for believing in something that can inspire, change and give people hope.

Mhm. Everything we've ever accomplished, any famous person, any remarkable achievement, will all be forgotten. The matter that makes up your body and your brain will eventually be the same matter that is inside future stars. Any memories of Cleopatra, King Tut, Joan of Arc, the Eiffel Tower and Eminem will all be destroyed, and you will be wiped out from existence with nothing left to testify to your existence but space dust.

A more accurate description would be "The Big Ballooning Theory". I know that sounds stupid, but that's essentially what it is - an extremely dense point of matter in space that started expanding. The name "big bang theory" was actually created by critics of the hypothesis when it was first proposed, but the name stuck. We don't really know where this matter originally came from, but there's plenty of hypotheses floating around, such as "there was nothing before the big bang in the same sense there's nothing north of the north pole", or "the universe has always been there in an endless cycle of expanding and then being pulled back in by gravity".

I'm sure a physicist would be able to give a better description, but this is the basics of what the theory actually is.
