Depends on how much you love her, I'd say. If, say, your life was bad before, and the love of your life seemingly has strong feelings towards you, it's probably going to be the happiest moment of your life, up until that point where you found out you've just been a fool to be laughed at.
I'd not justify the guy's action if the story were real, I'm just saying that even normal people can do the stupidest things when they're blinded by negative emotions.
