I have heard and seen many people getting fingers bitten off or having an artery or two cut open by those little "ankle bitters"

I call bullshit. I had just met these small dogs and they were yappy ankle biting bastards the moment I met them. And some of the smaller breeds were used as kill dogs in temples and "sacred" places. They were bred and trained with the intention of killing quickly and quietly at such a small size. I don't know much about their upbringing as I have no interest in knowing it, all I know is that anyone with half a brain can tell that pitt bulls are not dangerous just because they're pitt bulls. They're only dangerous in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to handle them. Anyone dumb enough to not know how to defend themselves again a dog (aside from children of course) probably got hit with a dose of Natural selection anyways. There are hundreds of methods to saving yourself in the case of an animal attack, the main is to treat it like it's playing, bat its head around like you would with your pet, then trip it by grabbing it's legs and pulling to the side is my favorite method because it puts you into a position to lay your forearm across their throat and the other on their hips while you grab the legs that are on the ground so you can pin it there (this is how you assert dominance over dogs in training and it keeps you out of reach of it's mouth). Now again, I understand the oddities, where training fails and any animal can attack at any point because of fucked up breeding and some sort of mental defect (sickness, brain swelling, etc etc), in which case, immediate action to put the dog to sleep humanely is the only answer at some times. But just because a breed is a large breed, doesn't mean it's dangerous right off the rip.
