 The worry is that the boss will mention like "hey i have a small issue, i can't connect to the internet" you spend hours isolating the problem, updating everything, clearing all the viruses and malware he has built up, installing a new wireless card, etc. etc. etc. and it ends up taking like 5 hours because it was a pain in the ass. In reality you made good time and are impressed with how thorough you were. you hand it back and say fixed, and he has no idea what went into it. Maybe in his mind what you did was supposed to be easy, and you were incredibly slow. Maybe he thinks you slacked off for a few hours and then turned it off and on again. Justifying the time you took is a natural reaction. the logic is sound. It was a tough job, but i'm done now." outcome one: boss nods, says good job, back to work. outcome two: boss asks what was the problem, you tell him/her what caused the problem and maybe how he/she could avoid it next time. boss nods, says good job, back to work. personally i just unsure of op's phrasing. it was a tiny problem, but must have been an unusual one so had to try multiple methods before finding a correct one. detailing all the other things done is a waste of time. if you start with "well first i checked C: drive but then i had to..." your boss will shut you down quickly so you would stop wasting the time of both of you and get back to work. #3 -
