If you were surrounded by a large horde of zombies, you're going to need to move fast to eliminate said zombies.
Lugging around a 25 pound pseudo-maul, held together by a few strips of duck tape is not the wisest long-term weapon.
The original splitting maul is designed for the same purpose, is light enough to handle for hours, and heavy enough to cut a person straight down their spine.
And unlike a sword, which has the potential to cut multiple enemies with a single slice, a maul is a one-hit, one-kill weapon, a personalized FUCK YOU for each zombie you take down with it. And you can open locked doors, smash vending machines, ATMs, or any other things you'd like opened.
It's really a more handy item all things considered.
The pseudo-maul from DR2 would be better off being thrown at a large group, and praying it takes out 3 or 4 of them. But doesn't have the durability of its original sledge with all that duck tape.
