| Or you can vote for an independent candidate with ideals you agree in (not telling you who to vote for.) A vote for an independent is a vote for the guy you disagree with more. I'll set up a hypothetical situation: Let's say you lean left but you don't really like Obama, and you really don't like Romney. You don't want Romney to win, but you know that after what Obama has done over the last 4 years, you can't vote for him in good conscience, so you vote for the green party. This is essentially taking a vote away form Obama because if you only had those 2 choices (and be realistic, you do), you would vote Obama. Whichever candidate you lean closer to on the political spectrum is who you should vote for because if you vote for a 3rd party, it takes a vote away from them, essentially giving it to the major candidate of the opposite party. What you just described is called strategic voting, and it is by far the most crooked thing about the democratic process in the US (possibly elsewhere too?). It is BECAUSE of that mentality that the two-party system exists. Here's my proposal (which won't be put in to effect): an alternative vote system. Basically the way it works is this (the following does not reflect my political views); I really like Ron Paul, but I'm afraid that by voting for Ron Paul that I'll be taking a vote away from Mitt Romney, whom I don't necessarily like but is the lesser evil of the two major candidates, and weakening his chances of winning. Under the current system I would do what you just described, but under the alternative vote system I would make Ron Paul my first choice, should he fail to get the majority then my vote will count towards Mitt Romney. By using this process we allow for more political diversity while effectively eliminating the idea of a "wasted vote." Did you not read it? I wrote a lot, I know. TL;DR reformation of the voting system via an alternative vote system, aka instant-runoff voting | ||
