I haven't been on FJ much the past few days. I've been talking with a guy I met on Steam a lot, and FiMFiction has just changed another aspect of its website for the worse, so I'm doing the best I can to stay up-to-date on that, since I wasn't on the previous terrible decision they made.

I'm sorry for not replying to your other stuff - I guess the fact that I've never played a Max Payne game kind of put me off of it, even though it was by Apocalyptica.

I think at a subconscious level, my mind just substituted one after-school conversation for another. I won't do that again.

I doubt I'm leaving, though. I don't go on the thread or Ponytime anymore, but I have several friends on here (you foremost among them) that I don't know anywhere else.

And I've become somewhat addicted to FJ. I'm certain that I'd like somewhere like Reddit or Memebase better, but I've invested too much into the site to leave. Even if I did, I would definitely tell everyone and distribute contact info.

Honestly, the time I spend on FJ is nothing compared to what it was. I used to cruise the pony thread for hours on end, talking to people and doing stupid crap. There wasn't any particular reason, but I just fell out of love with it. I mean, I never recognized many people in the first place, but when I came back after taking a week-long break, that was exacerbated even further.

Eh. I won't bitch about it any more.

Anyway, how was your day? That doesn't tend to come up much in our conversations.

Interesting music. Seems pretty cool, actually.

Drive, Drive . . . is that the show that only ran for one season? It was like they filmed a reality TV show about driving, I think. I could be wrong. I remember that show as actually being quite good, so it's only natural it got cancelled.

My day was good. It's the Friday before a long weekend and an assembly day, so my school had 45-minute periods. To my surprise, the talent show (that's what the assembly was) was actually really good. There was this one girl whose dance routine seemed to consist of "I have boobs! Look at my boobs!", and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

My hospitality (cooking) class was too short to do anything productive, so we just made food and ate it. I had a test for Challenge & Change (sociology, anthropology, psychology) which went pretty well, and in English we just watched some of the movie version of Death of a Salesman.

And now I have a three-day weekend. You know what that means?

And compared to my school it's pretty fucking weird. And talking about school, I found it weird today when I was doing my spoken Swedish thesis or whatever you call it, my teacher complimented my work many times and I got a 100% of it, and I was the best in our class.

I can't Swedish for shit in my own opinion.

Well, I can't Finnish or Swedish for shit in anyone's opinion, so you've got on up on me in that department.

Wait - Finnish, English, and Swedish? Does the Finnish school system demand that you speak three languages?

Well, yeah, since we are bilingual after all. In my town you can't go to the mall if you don't know Swedish, and everyone knows you can't be taken seriously on a career of marketing and economics if you can't English.

And can you speak Polish? Aaannd don't they speak, French in some parts of canada, like Quebec?

Well, English was kind of a given, since it's the international language and all, despite all reason and logic. Swedish seemed like it would be optional or something - I mean, mandatory trilingualism is just an insane concept to me.

I'll explain: you've probably lived your entire life in and around Finland, right? Honestly, unless you live in North America for an extended period of time, you probably just can't grasp how monolingual we are. Since English is the dominant language of the world, there's no reason for us to learn any other. Like, imagine your entire life if you needed to speak nothing more than Finnish. It's like that.

Even in Canada, bilingualism is a joke. The French parts of Canada (Quebec is the most well-known, though there are other places) tend to be either an English-dominated mix of the two languages, or French-speaking to the point of xenophobia. Most Quebecois people - the ones who make the laws, at least - tend to feel that their culture is under attack by English and other cultures and languages, so they become extremely anti-English. A few years ago, there was a big deal about Quebec declaring the burka an illegal garment because it made it too easy to falsify ID.

Quebec is weird. The only reason they're still a part of Canada is their size and location.

New Brunswick is the officially bilingual province, which is odd because it's a Maritime province and thus has little to do culturally with the whole kerfuffle. The other provinces teach French in school, but it's terrible unless you go balls to the wall with it, which I didn't.

To clarify: when I said I was Polish, I meant that I'm a quarter Polish, a quarter Ukrainian, and half Canadian (my father is about fifth-generation Canadian). I've always identified more with the Polish side - no real reason.

I actually tried learning Polish a few months ago, but I'm too old to learn a language as weird as Polish from scratch without abandoning all my hobbies.

Oh okay, and just to clear it to you, finnish is not something you just learn. It's actually a pretty fucking hard language, I mean, we have words for pretty much everything, and they're sometimes pretty long, and may not resemble the original word at all. Things like posession and time is often included into the word, and there's no need to use articles.

There's one thing though, we don't have masculine or feminine, just "he".

I could make a list of all the weird stuff, but it'd take long.

Lemme just give you a funny little sentence:

"I forgive for my unladylike behaviour."
"anteeksi naisellisuutemattomuuttani" and that's not even a long word.

I didn't mean to imply that it was easy - I just figured that it would be your mother tongue, and that you'd be most familiar with it.

But you grow up speaking it, don't you? Wouldn't you pick up a decent chunk of the language like that? I mean, people don't just create languages - it must at least be possible.

I know, but it's really hard, Swedish ain't that easy either to be honest.

And I haven't always lived in a city as Swedish as this, even the roadsigns are in both languages, and the area where we live in has a Swedish name, but most of the people still speak Finnish. And of course the papers come in Swedish too. It can get pretty complicated too sometimes.

But you know what's fun? Since there's "rikssvenska", the actual swedish way and the finnish-swedish way of pronouncing, I've practiced my rikssvenska to be top notch, and sometimes I switch languages in customer service situations, just to see their reactions. It's also interesting to do because I'm studying customer service by myself.
