That is incorrect. In fact, because we have become a globalized world, everything affects everything. For example, every dollar that someone spends, that puts a dollar into someone else's pocket. Time in this case can actually be quantified into money as well. It may seem like your own influence is minimal to the overall course of things in the world, but take 7 billion similarly shortsighted people and you get things such as economic inequality and environmental destruction, both of which inevitably also affect you and I. The resources an individual consumes can be objectively quantifiable. If you consume too much without providing a beneficial return, it affects everyone. Your argument is valid if you were somehow self-sustaining in your own little isolated patch of the world, but that is not the case. Even if those in poverty are 18,000 miles away, there are many ways that you can assist them with relatively little cost on your part, such as donating to Oxfam. On top of that, there are most likely people in your neighborhood who are in need of assistance, whether they are poor, old or sick, maybe all three. You may try to rationalize that those same people do not deserve your help, for example, "that homeless is just a drunkard anyway", but using that same rationalization, there is no reason why your parents shouldn't have let you starve or why someone shouldn't rob you, maybe even kill you right now (I do hope that these never happen to you). Thirdly, if you let yourself perceive things in such a small perspective, then it is true, you do feel pain, but you do not get an objectively shitty deal, you just let yourself perceive it that way. The best way to NOT get hurt like that is to get a spine, put things in perspective and adopt a cause or ideal to aim for, hopefully something rational and kind. Rampant individualism does not create happiness, nor is it benevolent.

I spill coffee on my lap? Shitty event. Who cares if someone else is starving in Africa, it does not effect me, and my lap getting wet does not effect them. It sucks that they're starving, but I'm not doing anything for or against that situation. I'm not starving, so MY reality is more comfortable than theirs. Hence insignificant events can suck sometimes.
