I am not even arguing if some of them are fake. Donuts originated in Eastern Europe, and Santa Clause originated from Saint Nikolaus.

Sinterklaas= Saint Nikolaus.

That doesn't make the fact right. Santa Clause didn't come from Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas AND Santa Clause originated from Saint Nikolaus.

User avatar #99 - reltih (03/26/2014) [-]
Santa claus originated from saint nicholas.

Whom in dutch has more than 1 alias. sint nikolaas, sinterklaas.
It's just about the way it's written.
The only facts that have me in doubt are the battery and the donut one, the others are true I can guarantee that.

I have. Why is he Dutch, because he has a dutch name?
User avatar #104 - reltih (03/26/2014) [-]
Sinterklaas is the basis for the North American figure of Santa Claus. It is often claimed that during the American War of Independence, the inhabitants of New York City, a former Dutch colonial town (New Amsterdam), reinvented their Sinterklaas tradition, as Saint Nicholas was a symbol of the city's non-English past

He actually isn't dutch, the holiday on which christmas was based though was a dutch holiday. Saint nicholas himself however is not of dutch origin.

So to clarify, it isn't claimed that ''santa claus'' is dutch, what is claimed however is that the holiday on which they based christmas was the dutch holiday called sinterklaas. And according to wikipedia that is correct.

Let's be honest here, America originated from colonies of European migrants, so would it really be that odd if they altered a european tradition and made their own holiday?
User avatar #111 - minorian (03/26/2014) [-]
I wasn't arguing that it's an American tradition. America isn't even old enough to have any traditions, hah!
My point was that many other countries celebrated Saint Nikolaus, and other countries even had their own variant of "Santa", more or less resembling the modern depiction of Santa.

I am convinced you're right though.
User avatar #103 - minorian (03/26/2014) [-]
If it's his modern red appearance the fact is talking about, then I get why it states he originated from Holland, but he was celebrated other places too, and the character he was based on was Greek.
User avatar #97 - minorian (03/26/2014) [-]
I am becoming unsure of my own argument. You might be right.
