I totally agree. There is a time and a place for everything, especially when it comes to augmenting the current system. During some of the contract work I have done configuring servers, I rearranged the order in which I completed tasks and found simple shortcuts to improve the efficiency of my work. I was able to complete 16 to 20 computers in an hour, where as the way my boss taught me to do it ended up with a mere 12 computers an hour. Now, that may not have been too smart of me, considering I was paid by the hour and after I had finished 800 computers my job was finished, but at least I earned the satisfaction of a job well done.

And the thing is that any boss that's worth his salt will find some way to reward you for being more efficient than expected, if at all possible - often, contract work is (or ought to be) done by the quantity of work and not by the time spend doing it - thus, you are payed a flat fee for completing the expected amount of work within the expected amount of time; if you complete it early, you get paid the same amount. That rewards the worker appropriately for efficiency and encourages mainly workers of high quality to return, since they will come and get the job done quickly and then get paid well - an appropriate and fair system for rewarding efficiency.

Sorry, I ramble. But yes, I think that ideally it would always be appropriate to give thought to being a more efficient worker.
