GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. It is not natural if it is genetically modified. While I don't agree with anon, our current studies on the effects of GMO are much to lacking to use it world-wide. Sure GMOs give more yeilds, but we don't know how the food effects the human body in the long run. So while I want to support GMOs, currently I cannot agree to use it world-wide, only in case studies for the moment.
User avatar #107 - thelastamerican (01/28/2015) [-]
Everything you eat has been genetically modified. The original plant that we got corn from resembles wheat. Tobacco is from a plant called calf's tong, and the cows we eat have had their genome twisted around so much that they would all die off after about 2 years of being left to their own devices.

There is no food you have ever eaten that has not been genetically modified.
User avatar #138 - xtwinblade (01/29/2015) [-]
GMO havent taken over every food in the world. GMO and selective breeding are two different things, when talking about GMO we mean genetically modified through biological engineering, not breeding our preferred breed.

Many countries do not allow the importation of gmo food that are under the age of 20 years in progress to deal with any side effects that may come with the food. Genetically modified corn was shown to provoke 80% more cancer in mice after being in the market for 10 years. That corn is still in the market in some countries.

i dont know what country you are from, but here in norway we arent allowed to genetically modify any live stock and it is generally viewed as unethical in many countries.
User avatar #139 - thelastamerican (01/29/2015) [-]
Line breeding is still genetic engineering. It's a business. Ask any farmer who breeds cattle.
User avatar #145 - xtwinblade (01/29/2015) [-]
But it isnt genetically engineering if you arent physically messing with the dna. Selective breeding isnt genetically engineering. GMO means something that humans have taken the dna from and changed.
User avatar #165 - thelastamerican (01/29/2015) [-]
You're messing with DNA by selectively eliminating undesirable DNA from the family. Maybe Genetic Engineering means something different in your language.
User avatar #166 - xtwinblade (01/29/2015) [-]
An example of GMO would be taking a gene code from a dna and replacing it with a matching gene code from a bacteria.
Using selective breeding does not change the dna in any way, you are just utilizing reproduction.
User avatar #167 - thelastamerican (01/29/2015) [-]
I see, so your DNA is identical to the DNA of your parents then. Both of them. Your DNA has no alteration whatsoever. Breeding has no bearing on genetic manipulation. Someone should really call up the dog breeders and the cattle ranchers and tell them to stop doing what they're doing because it makes no difference, and that all their products are genetically identical.
User avatar #168 - xtwinblade (01/29/2015) [-]
That is almost correct. My DNA is directly given from my parents, both of them. Its called Meiosis, i was given an equal amount of chromosomes from my parents and from that dna it split and divided, then multiplied into different sets of dna from my parents DNA. that is not altering the dna. there was no process where a gene was replaced in my dna, only where the chromosomes intertwined differently after my cells divided during reproduction.

Breeding has no bearing on genetic manipulation, because it is not manipulation.
User avatar #169 - thelastamerican (01/29/2015) [-]
Yes it is. You take two animals with genes you want and let the third animal die without reproducing. You cut out the undesirable genes in this way. Look, I'm not going to argue this any more. Take a look at any plant that you eat, then look at the plant it started out as. They are two very different plants because they had their genes manipulated in such a way that they would be more useful to people. If you can't come to terms with the fact that people have been playing with genetics for thousands of years I no longer care.
User avatar #170 - xtwinblade (01/29/2015) [-]
i dont think you understand what Genetic Manipulation mean.
You're talking about something as simple as natural selection and artificial selection as if it is manipulation.
Selective breeding is done by choosing preferred features of an animal and simply just breeding those features on.
Genetic manipulation means DIRECTLY ALTERING THE DNA.
User avatar #96 - demented (01/28/2015) [-]
it's basically engineered evolution and making immediate changes to a genetic code rather than waiting x number of generations for a desired trait to arise. To say that they aren't extensively tested enough to allow world wide consumption is assuming that it would lack even BASIC field testing. There is literally no reason not to be able to give crops able to provide food to arid or underproducing impoverished regions. The fact that a biological trigger is possible is great because it would make sure that should it escape that it would said crop would not overrun the local environment.

Comicexplain, what's the best series to read to get into the Guardians of the Galaxy. I heard the movie is better having some background on the characters through the comics. Just looking for suggestions as I'm pretty clueless in that area,

Honestly, I suggest starting from the beginning, or if you'd like, from each of their separate origin stories, in order to get the collective sphere of information! The movie is actually best to watch first, in order to get the devil of the details!

No, no problem. Mostly it's just me trying to pin down exactly what I want to go back to school for and I have some non-school options here. I went down to a radio-broadcast job fair last Wednesday and some of the people there had some good interest in me doing voice work so I might try and get a demo tape together sometime soon.

User avatar #363 to #362 - WindblownRebel (06/26/2013) [-]
I need to find a new place to dance, there's really only lessons available here that I found online. Basically, a lot of staying home and resting up after school and moving here (AKA sleeping like 13 hours a day.) I made a few friends this year before finals, and they had me over for a party... which wasn't a disaster like I had anticipated.

Able to add me back on Skype? I tend to not use FJ as a messaging system these days.
