It has a similar *if slightly more negative* connotation to geek in english. People in gamer and nerd communities often wear the word "geek" as a pride symbol for being so devoted to their fandom. The same applies to otaku, we use it as a prideful symbol *or rather an neutral expressive symbol* of our love of anime, because we don't CARE what people think about our favorite things.
