It is easy to just apply one trait onto another to imagine such things as crystalline or geological lifeforms by giving objects sentience. but that is not inventing a concept, it's just combining two old ones.

Geological life forms would be biological because they are alive and biology is the study of life. You are thinking of 'organic' which refers to carbon based molecules such as amino acids, nucleic acids and lipids.

Those aren't biological lifeforms though. A biological lifeform has to be made up of chained amino acids to classify as such. There are so many structures of biological lifeforms, surely more are possible:
Bacteria who absorb chemicals and process them into amino acid for energy, then divide.
Viruses who inject their DNA into other organisms to have them make more viruses.
Plants who use sunlight to generate energy which they use to transform CO2 and water into sugar and oxygen to build their bodies.
Animals who break down fats, proteins and sugar chains into amino acids and sugar, break down sugar to turn adenosine diphostphate into adenosine triphosphate for energy, store excess energy as fat and use amino acids to build muscle.
Fungae who break down sugar to create chitin and alcohol.
Surely there are infinite possibility for how else organisms can sustain themselves, so by all rights it shouldn't be hard to think of one or two more.

As for the face thing, that's because dreams aren't the result of imagination, but jumbled memories. If at some point you imagine a new face and manage to store it to memory, it can show up in your dreams, but your subconscious won't imagine new faces for you.

to be considered a life form, the structure has to show most, or all of the following: Homeostasis, organization, metabolism, growth, adaptation, response to stimuli, and reproduction. To limit the definition of life to just organisms with amino acids excludes the possibility of non-carbon based life and matter that could be extraterrestrial in nature

Yes, you can imagine new shapes, but only because you can use parts of other shapes as a reference. You can't use rock as a reference to imagine grass, trees, creaks and lakes.
If you want to know why, then why don't you try to imagine a lifeform that's biologically feasible, but not an animal, plant, lichen, fungus, bacteria, amoebae or virus?
#13 - deescalation (06/28/2015) [-]
This was a crystaline entity from Star Trek TNG that met all the criteria for life and your description. Also, scientists theorize that before amino acids were a thing, chemical reactions near underwater volcanic vents were occuring with the base elements causing algorithmic self replicating patterns that grew more complex the longer the chain was. So while I'm not smart enough to conceptualize entirely foreign concepts on the spot, other people have. It's a far easier task for a brain to go "But what if Jerry's face was darker, and he had 4 noses" in a dream without actually seeing a dark skinned 4 nosed man, than it is to dream up biological breakthroughs every night

Your brain can't imagine what it doesn't have a concept of. If your brain knows of nothing outside the cave, it can't picture anything but the cave.

It's the same as trying to imagine a new color, feeling or flavor, it's just not possible.
User avatar #24 - xgokaru (06/29/2015) [-]
Wasn't there something going around online about a blind man who dreamt of shapes or something...?

Then again how would you record something like that?

Hmm.
User avatar #11 - deescalation (06/28/2015) [-]
You can easily conceptualize new things such as shapes based on what you already have in the cave. You can dream that instead of walls the floors go on forever and instead of stalagmites the rocks form upwards and branch out like a tree etc. You're not trying to conceptualize something that is beyond the ability of the human senses, you're just reshaping things in your mind. If this were true the only things we would have would be things modeled after naturally occurring objects. That's literally what imagination is
User avatar #12 - TheMather (06/28/2015) [-]

It makes total sense. If a human grew up thinking there was only one other human existed, it would make sense that they only dream about that person and themself. They would have no concept of a third human.

let me clear it up when you dream your brain cant makes things up on the fly like ohhh know theirs a big UNESCO cock eating monster. instead when you fall asleep your brain kinda reuses the shit you thought of and reused them like lord catise, your brain might reuse that. kinda like a recycle bank the brain takes all of your thoghts you had and decides which ones to reuse. so if you every dream you might notices stuff you thought of or made. ;)

I like the Air Force as a whole, but when I was in BMT my contracted job as computer programmer got pulled because I had a waiver saying I was misdiagnosed with depression as a kid. Just having the waiver got the job pulled, and I ended up as a crew chief. I'm not a mechanically inclined person, and I joined the Air Force hoping for a desk job. I've also been going through some medical stuff, so while it's difficult to balance my job and that, without Tricare I would have been ****** . I came across a bunch of my medical bills while moving out of the dorms and they totalled up to around $13,000. Your experience in the military will be what you make it. Do your best, respect your supervisors and peers, and you'll do fine

This is an amazing discovery. I'll tell Ryan the story this weekend, but you'll probably guess who I am before then.

this was Ryan btw. 2 day suspension. I'm guessing this is Matt or Will
User avatar #47 to #46 - zarrowsmith (08/30/2013) [-]
Yeah, Ryan messaged me the picture earlier today, that's why I was freaking out when I saw it here. And I don't play WoW like Matt or Will.

I work at Seymour Johnson AFB NC, I played WoW, and other MMOs for about 8 years under the handle Speedydev, Deemoney, and Deescalation. And I went to high school at Overhills here in NC. I also post a lot of anime **** onto this site, and I've been live streaming shows as well. Any of those ring a bell?
