I'm teaching myself Japanese so I will fail until I can properly make a sentence. I'm trying to memorize Hiragana and then I'll move on to Kanji and Katakana. What is Katakana used for anyway?

Being a nerd.

Japanese is a very complicated language, I wish you best of lucks in your quest of knowledge.
I don't know much Japanese, I took some classes once, so I only know the most basic of basics.
Hiragana is a syllabary which they use for their native words, like ありがとう
Katakana is a syllabary which they use for adopted words, like レモン (Remon which is lemon) or ビール (Biru which is beer)
Kanji is the written representation of things, the kanji is supposed to "look like" the object it represents (But it has evolved somehow and honestly I don't find any resemblance)

You should learn hiragana and katakana first, because the same object has many names, so the kanji is the same, but the pronunciation changes depending on what you are using it.

For example, 人 (Hito or Jin) is the kanji for person. If you are talking about someone, you should use the "hito" form, あの 人 は (ano hito ha or that person is). When you are talking about nationalities, you use the "jin" form, 私は アメリカ人です (watashi ha amerikajin desu or I'm American) Watashi and Jin are written in Kanji while Amerika is written in katakana.

I hope I have been helpful.

You have been of much help. It helps when I watch anime too. That way I have 24-minute-long examples of conversations in Japanese.
Once I master Japanese I'll be trilingual (English, Spanish, Japanese)
User avatar #89 - blacklightsun (05/01/2014) [-]
So you speak spanish, well, it's my native language!
I hope you have seen the last picture I have uploaded, so you can see the evolution of Kanji.
Also I would like to point out that, in Japan, they have 2 kinds of doors
The one they "invented", which is the sliding one (扉 or とびら tobira)
And the one they adopted from outside Japan, the one you and me use in a daily bases. (ドア doa).
And, as they adopted items and names in their vocabulary (such as lemon, beer, door) you will find words from other languages adopted into Japanese (remon, biru, doa) this are english examples, but you will find other languages like German (ドイツ doitsu is Germany, an adaptation of the country's original German name, Deutschland)
And right now I don't quite remember any other language that has been mixed and adapted into Japan.

I sometimes get informed that someone has mentioned me(my username)
But 90% it's just someone who talks about Japanese and their name for germany

User avatar #91 - lunarmage (05/01/2014) [-]
>Angled doors are pronounced doa
Where did they get the pronunciation from? Boston? They could of easily said doru
Also, what I've seen is just English (Miriku, Testo, Gei etc.)
User avatar #92 - blacklightsun (05/01/2014) [-]
What I remember form my few japanese classes was that door was doru, but for some reason Google Translate said it was doa and I tought I remembered incorrectly. Also, I'm thinking Google Translate got the Germany name wrong too, I remember it being a little bit longer. I'm not sure anymore.
