If the cabbie was listening to it, what do you think the customer thought he was?
infidel has only ever been used to insult others. It's the equivilant of saying "heathen" - implying that the person is inferior and unclean.
he could've used a different word in this scenario (which I know didn't even happen)

Difference is, you can't equate it to calling someone black. A closer comparison would be the word "nigger." "Black," nowadays, is not commonly used as an insult at all, whereas the aforementioned two are.
Infidel doesn't simply mean someone without god. It means someone who is inferior specifically because they don't worship allah.

When applied to non-monotheists, the usage of the word is similar to the appellations heathen or pagan. As such, the term infidel has often been applied to atheists, whose disbelief is viewed negatively in both Christianity and Islam.
Infidel is an English language word commonly used to translate the equivalent Arabic language word for non-Muslims; kafir, literally the one who "covers", is usually translated as "disbeliever"; i.e. in English translations of the Quranic verse, 109:1, In the Islamic doctrinal sense, the term only refers to a person who does not recognize the one God (Allah) such as atheists and polytheists. However, since Islam considers Jews and Christians as fellow believers they are called "People of the Book (Ahl al-kitab)" instead.
Kafir, like infidel, has also come to be regarded as offensive, thus some Muslim scholars discourage its use due to the Quran's command to use kind words. It is even a punishable offense to use this term against a Jew or a Christian, under Islamic law. Some contemporary Muslim extremists, however, have applied the term to all non-Muslims.

I would not use wiki for definitions of words. Every dictionary type site and my dictionary says only 'one without god' or 'one without faith' etc. Other words such as nigger, or gringo also include as part of the definition derogatory or offensive. Although the word may be often used negatively, its definition is not a derogatory one

But it's the usage that counts. Never had I not heard it used in a non-derogatory sense. While the definition of "faggot" can also be said to simply mean homosexual, it was specifically made to target a single group as inferior. The same situation happens with "infidel"

DO you, my fine gentleman, really think that that's the exact words of the Muslim?? In today's world Muslims are under pressure and pinpointed for things they haven't done, or things that some Muslims done, and for that the all the Muslims get blamed. This's probably extreamed out or vise versa.
