Aight. The world's gone to shit. Death everywhere. Afraid to die. Think of all our stupid urban legends. Ghosts. Bigfoot. The lochness fucking monster. If there are real mutanted up monsters rolling about everywhere, I'm pretty sure a few ghost stories to explain the pipes making noises. Even so, if you kept playing, I'm sure you'd realise that the plot involves dark ones, and human nature when it comes to different beings, not- sigh.
tl;dr the games not about souls floating
#41 - darthblam (06/09/2013) [-]
It can be assumed they are souls.. but I always saw it from a scientific perspective. It's all related to the mind. The radiation perhaps, in some way, is fucking with your mind and imagination. Nothing is really there, you're just losing your shit.
Which is sort of what it comes down to in the end with the Dark Ones and such...
It's just easier for people to assume "ghosts"

Is there a further plot twist here? I know there'd be people here who don't want it ruined, but to be honest I'm not likely to read the book or finish the game, so I'd like to know.
I get the feeling with people here referencing 'the Dark Ones' kinda offhandedly vaguely that they're trying not to say too much.

Meh.. fair enough.
Not much of a plot twist really. Hell, I'll give you a whole summary of the situation in the metro.
Something happened, war broke out, everyone used nukes. Boom, government is gone and there is nuclear winter. All of surviving humanity is forced to hide in the subways or risk dying from radiation and poisoned air on the surface. The radiation has created mutant creatures as well.
One kind of these creatures are called the Dark Ones. Whenever they get anywhere near a human, they absolutely fuck with their mind, causing almost instant dementia, schizophrenia, and any other kind of mental illness you can think of. It usually leads to death or severe incurable trauma.
Artyom, the guy you play as, is tasked with launching some of the last known nukes that have been recently found at their home to save humanity.
The twist is that it's possible that the Dark Ones aren't actually trying to kill humanity, but are just meaning to make contact, we are simply incompatible. It's also brought to light that they may very well be the next step in evolution for humanity. That our way of life is doomed to end so the Dark Ones will begin anew.
There are some less important details I skipped, but that's pretty much it. The main twist and ideas of the first and second game for ye'.

SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK AND GAME BELOW
The "Dark Ones" are basically believed to be an evolved race of humans that are occasionally referenced as "Homo Novus," the truth is the Dark Ones are not actual evil beings hell bent on the complete destruction of mankind. They were actually attempting to help mankind, however humans do not have the proper... Let's call them "brain waves," to handle the telepathic way of speaking the Dark Ones possess. As a result anytime the Dark Ones attempted communication with humans it resulted in the persons mind being torn apart (quickly in the game, slowly in the books). As a result human's assumed hostilities and began fighting the Dark Ones, the Dark Ones never meant to kill humans, but they would defend themselves if they needed to while still attempting communications with man.

If it makes you feel better despite the game having a good and bad ending where you can destroy or save the Dark Ones. In the book Artyom sets up the missile guidance system and turns it on, then he finally realizes the Dark Ones never meant to kill humans and that the Dark Ones might just be humanity's salvation, all the Dark Ones manage to "hear" Artyom's revelation and all look towards him from the botanical gardens... And then the missiles launch and kill them all. The novel ends implying that Artyom commits suicide by removing his Gas Mask on the top of the tower he launched the missiles from.

Good thing I didn't say Artyom does commit suicide then, only that it's implied. But honestly I did not know he survived. I hadn't had the honour of reading Metro 2034 yet as it still hasn't been translated into english (shame really, Metro 2033 was one of my, if not my, favourite book[s])

Bingo. M. Night Shamalamadingdong came to mind for me.
If I'm honest I'm not a big fan of plot twists in games, unless they're something like "OH, BUT WAIT. YOU'RE THE BAD GUY, MOTHERFUCKER.", like in AC3.
Very much a fan of RPG games so I prefer stuff that lets you make the story.

Honestly I think they were more a type of psychic anomaly rather than actual ghosts, much like the electric sphere or the area's that cause hallucinations. (also in the novel it's implied that the anomalies are merely ultrasound being emitted through the pipes which just fucks with peoples nervous system)

From what I saw it made sense to me that in the game Heaven and Hell got nuked, so I just thought that all the supernatural stuff tied in with that. I assumed it was the typical 'Catholic mythology' stuff that happens in games and films and I don't like that stuff.
