well if the dm is saying he cant say his hp then he should do the they dont know it rule
They cant say it directly to eachother, but each player tracks their own HP. A DM should still track it as well though so he has an idea of how things are going.
if the dm is being a sticler for the traditional rp rule of dont say your hp, then he should follow the base rule
that is that he rolls dmg and tells players "that hit you hard" "the atk barely scratched you" "you are feeling massive pain from that blow" while the dm alone tracks the hps
if the dm is telling them how much dmg they are taking then the cleric could just pay attention to the dmg each player takes which makes the dont tell each other rule redundant...
look dood, its dnd, dms rules matter over any in the book, i was just saying that if you want your chars to rp away from numbers, then dont give them any, thats how my first dm was and it was fine
of course you can play the game any way you want to, but if you plan to make a rule like that then follow through all the way istead of half assing it
Telling players how much damage they take doesnt really matter that much unless the healer is literally writing it down, it just gives you a general idea, which is alright.
I usually just have people roll Heal checks, and depending on the result, they actually sometimes get told exactly how much health people have.
same im trying to go more in depth, but ill never do the "you dont know your own hp" bit. My uncle did a session like that once with my cousins and some of his friends and i hated it even did the dmg rolls hidden "your flame strike looks very big ect" it sucked and as such ill never do that to my players
