its doable without acetylene, and the results are better. but i can't build a forge in my current living situation, and i plain just don't have the time anymore. i love working with metal, though.

the funny thing is I learned how to make a chisel with a piece of octo-steel (8-edged steel) by heating and folding with an acetylene torch in highschool. after that, it was more about how to harden and temper the edge so it didn't break the first time it struck something harder than wood. I don't have a garage or workspace any more, so I haven't made anything in about a year. but it's a fun hobby. expensive, though. you have to have a license for the acetylene gas, and steel's not exactly dime a pound.
